Will The State Really Improve City Schools?–The Trouble With Dreamy Slogans

“Together we are making Bridgeport the cleanest, greenest, safest most affordable city, with schools and neighborhoods that improve each year” … Mayor Bill Finch

For nearly four years Mayor Bill Finch has trumpeted the declaration above his battle cry. “Schools … that improve each year.” Really? Then one day we all woke up to learn that city schools were a disaster. Gee, what happened, mayor? That’s the trouble with dreamy governmental slogans. They sometimes come back to bite ya.

Maybe the mayor’s misplaced spin has Hugh Bailey, assistant editorial page editor of the Connecticut Post, perplexed about Finch’s claim that no one was surprised when the Bridgeport Board of Education threw in the towel and turned city schools over to the state. An excerpt from Bailey’s column:

Bridgeport, which has a reputation built on dysfunction, is only adding to it these days. Mayor Bill Finch last week claimed with a straight face that no one in the city was taken by surprise when the Board of Education ceded control to the state. This about a decision made with no public input, in a meeting scheduled with almost no public notice.

What’s mystifying about the administration’s actions is that hardly anyone argues the basic points. The schools need help, desperately. A radical change may, in fact, be called for, and the state takeover could be the right idea. That’s not what people are mad about.

They’re mad, in part, because officials continue to cling to discredited justifications. They continue to cite school board disharmony as an acceptable reason for radical change, when everyone agrees the problems long predate the most recent board. They have yet to say what, specifically, a new five-person panel can accomplish that the disbanded six-person majority could not.

Worst of all, they either imply or state outright that the messiness of democracy is a luxury that Bridgeport can’t afford. High-performing districts have time to get bogged down in minutiae, but not here. Little did we know the major impediment to closing the achievement gap is Robert’s Rules of Order.

    1. Hey Lennie–give us a update on the Frisbee toss–I’m guessing about 300 city employees showed up for another abysmal failure by Finch to improve our image.

  1. I have underestimated the awesomeness of The Bridgeport Kid. His term here is endless. He has most-favored blogger status (MFBS) as befits a charter member of LG’s goon squad (CMOLGGS). This guy’s like getting-money-by-mail, I’m sure he has a special position in the campaign. Covert operations is my guess.

He’s already adopted the persona of the underdog.

    1. Local Eyes,
Your thin skin does not surprise. Excessive consumption of alcoholic beverages causes tissue degeneration. Last time I saw you was at an OIB soiree at Matty’s Corner. You kept trying to sell me on a business proposal that, like your opinions expressed here, had absolutely no merit. There was no escape because you followed me everywhere and wouldn’t shut up. Please shut up now.

        1. Torres is not a Dem and does not talk like a Dem. He doesn’t talk like a Latino either. He talks like a white male tea partier. Just what Bridgeport needs!!! (note the sarcasm)

  2. Finch doesn’t realize Black Rock isn’t Bridgeport politically. He also doesn’t realize he probably will go into that goodnight and quite soon. However, whoever is running against the birdman needs to have qualified, knowledgeable and aggressive poll watchers to protect the ballots. Remember, “it isn’t the people who vote who have the power, it’s the people who control the vote who have the power.” Mike Trivisano, Cleveland, Ohio WTAM Radio.

  3. *** Bullied, then it wouldn’t be a united front partnership? Also Joe may end up just being a spoiler for Finch’s benefit due to his ties with Mario, no? *** EXPECT THE UNEXPECTED! ***

  4. NO WAY, junior. My thick skin can repel your toughest barb. We’re here to pontificate and shutting up is the antithesis of the blogging process so instrumental in your boss’ success. Mr. Grimaldi, don’t be afraid to remind TBK that he’s in violation of user regulations here and the consequences of his further actions. Even goon squad members have to adhere to the user regs, right?

    1. I am my own boss, Lo-Cal Eyes. I’m a supporter of Mary-Jane Foster on my own time and my own dime. You certainly do more than a little pontification, expounding the “virtues” of your grossly exaggerated self-importance. Take a pill and get over yourself.

  5. “Will the State really improve the schools?”

We could put Sheriff Chopalong Gonzalez in charge of the schools and they would improve over what we had running it.

  6. Seriously, who in here is voting for Joel Gonzalez? This guy is a Democrat, then Republican, now a Democrat wtfffffffff!!! Is this another example of a politician just trying to get hired? Sure sounds like it to me I’m very interesting to see who will be gong against him because I might just have to vote for Joel. If tc thought GWB was not a bad president I might have to fill in the oval the other way for another candidate … … … I SURE have not forgotten tc. But at the end of the day I’m not a stupid voter and I know tc loves Bridgeport!!! GO tc!!!

  7. I agree with you, donj. MJF should have given that position on the slate far more consideration then she obviously did. Putting his name up there on the ballot with hers is a stupid error in judgement.

MJF, I would like an explanation as to why you think Joel Gonzalez is suitable to hold public office especially on your ticket.

A lot of people think you are the right answer. Putting Gonzalez up there with you is making some of us wonder.

  8. MJF will appoint Ernie Newton the Commissioner of Sex and Music. If she wants any of his fucking advice all she has to do is whistle …

  9. EVEN THOUGH donj and yahooy seem to have justifiable reservations about Joel Gonzalez’ suitability for the sheriff position, they both appear to still support MJF’s candidacy. That’s fine because it shows MJF’s confidence in her choices and her ability to drag a liability across the finish line–two needed traits in Bridgeport politics.

  10. MJF has made many bad decisions. She opposed the mayor’s takeover of the BOE and then proposes to appoint the majority of an elected body as mayor–stupidity. She then appoints all of her own “Volunteers” to political positions. Politics at its finest.

  11. Anyone hear the news about the 20 white firefighters in New Haven being awarded 2 million dollars in a discrimination case? The city of New Haven has agreed to settle with the 20 white firefighters for 2 million and pay their legal fees of 3 million.
Ron maybe you could fill us in on some more of the details.

  12. Hey Ron Mackey,
I was at the FPV reunion yesterday, Newton was there and MJF was speaking with him. I heard her say she would love to meet with him. Over 1000 people. Everyone was hugging and kissing him. MJF saw all the love Ernie has in his community!

  13. MJF made the rounds yesterday. I heard she was at the East Side police precinct opening and the Frisbee attempt at Kennedy stadium. BTW the attempt to break the Guinness world record failed miserably. I heard that lots of Bpt folks refused to go because they didn’t want to have anything to do with Bill Finch. Too bad the health dept was forced to put Finch’s name on their marketing materials. That guy could ruin a wet dream.

  14. Fixer, that is sad but true. Also, not one of Finch’s dept heads and not one person from the Mayor’s office was present to support any of these Bridgeport events. That’s what happens when you hire people with no roots and no commitment to Bridgeport. They collect their big paychecks and go home without a thought about giving anything back to the city that supports them.

  15. Talk about a catchy phrase that does not work; Let’s move Bridgeport.
Another marketing disaster brought to you by the Finch administration.
All they needed was 860 people to show up and they couldn’t even pull that off.
Gee do you think there were 900+ people at the Vibes? And don’t tell me they were not from Bridgeport. Half the people mentioned in the CT Post were not from Bport.

  16. And, nothing personal Ms. Horton but you should not be the spokesperson for a healthy, robust lifestyle. Same as the previous Health Director, having an overweight, dare I say obese, health director telling me what to do doesn’t work. But what does Bill Finch care?

  17. Finch thinks if he says something, it is true. People who know him mostly think if he says something it is a lie. Bridgeport needs a mayor whose word is good, who will focus on a strong local effort to bring jobs to the city. MJF can bring this leadership. Why does John Gomes want to be a spoiler? He has seen the numbers. Even though he is a political neophyte, he should still be able to read the writing on the wall. If he can’t, some of his top supporters should be able to and should have the guts to sit him down and direct him to do the right thing and rid Bridgeport of Finch. Is it ego? Is it ignorance? Is it fantasy? Or has someone else cut a deal with him to keep him in the race? RWB wants to know …

    1. Au contraire, Finch thinks if he says something people will either believe him or be fooled by the syntax of passivity and indirection.

  18. Another “Feel Good Moment About BPT” goes down in flames. Do you think Finch can read the writing on the wall? These expensive publicity stunts only piss off already disheartened taxpayers–Where did the money come from that financed the “Frisbee Toss?” Free frisbees and T shirts cost taxpayers’ dollars that could have been used more wisely. If anyone could tell me who financed this cluster fuck–I would be grateful.

        1. News Flash! Mario Testa wants to deal for BOE new school construction contracts. Gomes tells Testa to take a walk. Foster will meet with Testa this week for lunch at BRYC. That is all for now!

          0
          1. Ronin, no one believes your stories. You’re an asshole. And a desperate one to boot!

            0
  19. I read the CT Post interviews of all three candidates and I must say Gomes’ responses to the questions were sadly lacking in substance. He has got to say more than when I get to city hall.

    0
    1. I agree with tc. Gomes’ responses were unimaginative. He’s paying his new campaign manager big bucks–you’d think he’d do a better job. Finch’s answers were bullshit too. I have to say MJF responded like a woman who is ready to lead our city. A candidate (and a mayor) are not expected to have all the answers. But if they’re smart, they surround themselves with smart, capable people who guide them. MJF gets that. John and Bill don’t.

      0
      1. Hey chs, you want to take that back?
“But if they’re smart, they surround themselves with smart, capable people who guide them. MJF gets that.”

        Like tc & Joel?

    1. I’d like to know, too. Chosen 1 and Cupcakewhorebag have been trumpeting Gomes’ impending victory and he’s been acting like a desperate candidate. Not much money, taken to sniping at Mary-Jane Foster–he must know she’s likely to garner more votes in the primary. Now that Charlie Coviello has been co-opted by MJF, John Gomes is in LAST PLACE.

Lay off the airplane glue, Chosen 1. It’s clouding your mind.

  20. For those of you taking pot shots at people who are running for any office … They all have it over everyone who thinks they can do it better, but don’t and they won’t even try. It is not easy for anyone to stand up and say, “I want to make a difference and I am willing to take all the insults, jeers and degradation because I want a chance to try.” They brave it out hoping they will be judged on their positions, their sincerity and their commitment, and some will fall short, but they do it anyway. Their reward is they don’t have to say, “What if,” they can say, “I got involved, what did you do?” If the only answer is … I sat at my computer and criticized then I ask you … who is the winner then? Not everyone who runs wins, not everyone who runs is the best choice, but everyone who runs can at least say I tried. So keep the criticism to people’s stance on the issues and stop the personal attacks. Thank you to the people who run, to the people who work behind the scenes, to the people who vote, and may the best person win. Weighing all the options, the winner to me is Mary-Jane Foster.
