Dr. Camelia Lawrence, a surgeon with Hartford Healthcare, announced on her Facebook page the passing of Carolyn Vermont, former aide to Mayor Joe Ganim, ex local NAACP president and executive director of Habitat for Humanity of Coastal Fairfield County.
Details about her death were not immediately available. She passed away in her native Jamaica.
Always gracious and active in the Bridgeport community, Vermont was proud of her Jamaican heritage as she noted in a 2021 interview with OIB.
From Dr. Lawrence:
Today we mourn the loss of a dear friend, a sister, and a true community champion.
Carolyn Vermont was known to many as a proud daughter of Bridgeport, an advocate, a builder, and a steady voice of reason and calm. She was always willing to support, always ready to lend a helping hand to those in need. She was a voice for the voiceless, never afraid to dive deep into complex issues in pursuit of thoughtful, lasting solutions. Her generosity of spirit and boundless kindness touched countless lives. When I returned to the Bridgeport area in 2015, she was one of the very first to reach out and welcome me home. That was Carolyn……..the ultimate #connector, the bridge between people, purpose, and possibility. 💕
Her absence will be deeply felt across this community she loved so fiercely. May we honor her not only in words, but by continuing her good work of lifting others, building community, and standing courageously for what is right.
Today, my heart feels broken. 😭😭😭
Rest well, Carolyn. Your legacy lives on.

I remember Carolyn Vermont when she worked for the City as well as was elected President of the Greater Bridgeport NAACP. Subsequently I shared the experiences of presiding and administering a local Rotary Club where “service above self” was a motto and standard. Finally and more recently she directed local activities for the Habitat for Humanity where I had served in Phu Ket, New Orleans, as well as Bridgeport through the years.
People need quality residences in which to establish their household and make it a home.
May Carolyn’s family know that her spirit will likely be working to inspire more attention and actual results to support folks in their search here in Bridgeport. She was appreciated for her commitment to meeting the community where it was at present and assisting it in moving forward. Wishing her a restful peace. Amen.
John, I don’t know her, never met her, but it feels like I did, throughout the years on OIB and somewhat civics engagement in Port politics. I have seen many posts from people and groups involved in Port politics that cross the spectrum for Port pols, community groups, and friends. Her presence will be lost to those she touched along her life’s journey. My her spirt fly in the heavenly cosmos and radiate down to the Port.
They should have a dedication ceremony at the Walk of Honor for her.
Peace out, John. Best of luck with your Civics is Dcussions
