Puerto Rican Power – Don’t Poke The Bear, Or In This Case The Bunny

The saying “I’m an island surrounded by assholes” certainly fits following the Trumpian circus freaks that spewed bigotry and hate at Madison Square Garden Sunday night including cretinous remarks by Tony Hinchcliffe, a podcast host, assailing U.S. territory Puerto Rico.

“There’s a lot going on, like, I don’t know if you know this but there’s literally a floating island of garbage in the middle of the ocean right now. Yeah. I think it’s called Puerto Rico,” he said.

It’s a joke, right? That’s always the hackneyed excuse in Trump world when something goes over like a fart in a jammed elevator.

Bridgeport, Connecticut’s most populous community, enjoys about 30,000 Puerto Ricans, the largest in the state.

Bridgeport State Rep. Chris Rosario was quick to respond in a social media statement.

“I strongly condemn the vile remarks made at Donald Trump’s rally, Puerto Rico and the Latino community. As a proud Puerto Rican, I refuse to let hate speech go unchallenged. We demand respect, accountability, and unity.”

As well Bridgeport State Rep. Antonio Felipe:

“The fact that a man was comfortable enough to be so brazenly hateful and discriminatory at a presidential campaign rally speaks volumes about who Donald Trump is and what his values are. Puerto Rico is responsible for 900 Purple Hearts in World War II, 2700 in the Korean War and 345 in Vietnam amongst others. Add in our many contributions with US based businesses, medicine, arts, sport, entertainment and pop culture and it cannot be denied that we have made large contributions and have a clearly defined place in this country. Donald Trump has had no problem treating exceptional Americans like garbage be they women, people of color or even veterans and Purple Heart recipients. Anyone who claims to support true patriotism and American values must realize that this was not a first or a mistake and that he has absolutely no business leading the United States of America.”

While the haters spewed, Kamala Harris was wooing the 500,000 strong Puerto Rican community in battle ground state Pennsylvania about her economic plan for mainlanders and islanders.

Hearing the Trump supporter’s comments, Puerto Rican superstar Bad Bunny signaled support for Harris on Sunday, sharing a clip on social media of the vice president’s plans for Puerto Rico to his roughly 45 million followers on Instagram.

What Beyonce and and Taylor Swift represent to their respective BeyHives and Swifties followers, streaming sensation Benito Antonio Martinez Ocasio, aka Bad Bunny, is equal to his passionate Puerto Rican fan base.

When candidates battle for the souls in a snug race that will come down to half dozen or so competitive states, this stuff can matter.

There’s no putting the slime back into the vocal cords on this one. It’s now a question, how much more does Bad Bunny want to weigh in with his fan base.

A little advice to Trump world: don’t poke the bunny.

  1. Filling out the ballot for people on Election Day (or in early voting) will not be an impulsive move for those bothering to vote. The bigoted, greedy, and “impressionable” will vote for Trump with a steady hand — this will be a number that largely identifies as “Republican” and which constitutes about 40% of all those that will bother to vote (The upper 1% of income + those registered to vote, that are likely to vote, with IQ’s below the norm — about 1 % + 25% of the vote + a fudge-factor of angry, confused voters of average intelligence, for a total of about 40% of all voters). About 60% of remaining voters — of normal+ IQ — will realize that there is a much more (-) than a (+) effect that is associated with the election a hateful, impulsive, greedy, low-IQ POTUS, as DJT already showed us in 2010-2020, than with the election of a progressive POTUS (e.g., Kamala Harris). The other 60% of the voting electorate will go with Harris, without reservation, and will be reflected in both the popular and EC votes….

We won’t have to worry about DJT and his racist, fascist brigade after 11/6/24. After he gets his figurative head handed to him at the polls with the final (60%-40%) vote count, he’ll be packing his travel bag for Rikers Island (or Moscow) and his misguided, deranged, confounded followers will be attempting, unsuccessfully, to assert massive voter fraud, even as most of them try to reenter some sort of normal state of being/function…

Puerto Ricans now have an even more obvious duty to get out and vote against Trump — as do all of us with real American values who value and respect ALL Americans, and ALL those who would otherwise aspire to be Americans or be friends of America.

  2. Readers of Only in Bridgeport,
For the past nine years we have seen and heard one man with a citizen’s right to “free speech” so distort, soil and frankly trash this democratic principle that it has lowered public communication norms to imitate a “limbo contest”, as in “How low can you go?” Too far, obviously, but more righteous and caring messages need to respond and question. The ‘jokes’ are not funny. They are absurd and de-humanizing. Where are the challengers? Where are your voices to combat the ‘would-be’ autocrat who tells us about his plans, not just ‘concepts’, for being a dictator on his first day. Are we ready for a dictator? Have you recently reflected upon the rights you enjoy every day? I have read the Bill of Rights, again.

I hope that you cast an informed vote by the close of balloting on November 5, 2024 for each candidate listed as well as the ‘election’ issue question. Likely, we will have to wait for results from far and perhaps, near to be assembled and reported. I have no major fears about the process. It has been under close oversight of late in state after state. The courts seem ready to deal with genuine or threatening allegations that are backed by evidence. Whimsical charges, those not based on facts and reality, from folks without identity or standing will be likely dismissed.

When the dust settles we will likely hear more “good news” from Kamala Harris about our United States. The opposing candidate will be able to contemplate his future in the legal and financial systems without the burden of campaigning that should have included debating with policy statements and a democratic political philsophy rather than trashing a political party from the inside through fear, dark money and operations that intimidate.

If that is what happens, we will have dodged a serious challenge to our democratic system, to our civic practices, and the way we participate in the UNITED States. The power will be in the hands of the people where oversight can become more durable. That promises a more worthy future for family legacies. Time will tell.

  3. Wow! The Wall Street Journal (The Trickle-Down Gazette)! Now there’s a daily must-read for the (100-99)% of the American public that wants to make sure that they don’t join the ranks of the “other,” untouchables…. I’m sure that their jaundiced-eye view of economic reality will sway a lot “undecided’ votes that are looking for a long-winded, biased take on candidate economic policy…

    In any event:

  4. Bad Bunny another one on the P Diddy list. The only Puerto Ricans crying about the joke are plantation Democrat Puerto Ricans who still haven’t realized that they are locked up in the chains of the Democratic Party who have screwed them over for decades. Have you seen our island lately. Littered with garbage, including corrupt politicians and rampant with crime. Politicians who were in charge of upgrading the power grid after Hurricane Hugo in 89 and instead pocketed the money for them and their cronies. To this day the power grid remains untouched. Thanks to el Partido Democrata or to translate the Democratic Party. Sorry this thick skinned Puerto Rican is voting TRUMP. Lenny don’t censor my post as you always do. Just saying.
