It’s been a battle for Superintendent of Schools Carmela Levy-David, on the job for more than a year.
Now the latest news: nearly all 600 teachers who participated in a Connecticut Education Association poll expressed zero confidence in her leadership, citing rejection of concerns shared by staffers, lack of respect for classroom teachers, shortage of trust and chaotic administration, as well as fear of retaliation for raising uneasiness about working conditions.
A large majority of educators also shared they are considering leave of the district.
Response from Levy-David:
District administrators became aware Wednesday night of a recent teacher survey circulated by the Connecticut Association of Education (CEA).
“While we are disappointed that the CEA did not communicate those results to us first so we could have worked collaboratively, we take the concerns raised about teachers’ confidence in our leadership seriously,” said Superintendent Dr. Carmela Levy-David.
The district also reached out to CEA Thursday morning to discuss and view the survey, but representatives from CEA had not responded as of Thursday afternoon.
At the beginning of this school year, the district implemented policies in efforts to improve student outcomes. The data listed at the end of this document lists some of the challenges the district has been working to resolve. In response to those policies, teachers said that the roll out of changes were overwhelming and too fast. District administrators listened and scaled back those changes.
Levy-David said she appreciates the feedback she has received regarding the pace of change in the district, and she is committed to adjusting how BPS implements its strategies. Administrators are actively working with key stakeholders, including teachers, to make necessary improvements.
“We understand that feelings of fear and apprehension can significantly impact our staff’s willingness to communicate openly, but their feedback is essential to continue to make things better for them moving forward. We are committed to fostering a safe and supportive environment where educators feel empowered to express their thoughts and concerns without fear of retaliation,” Levy-David said.
Administrators are working diligently to continuously improve the district for teachers, so that they can provide the best service to their students. Educators have a responsibility under Title VI of the Civil Rights Act to provide equitable educational opportunities for all students, regardless of their race, color, or national origin.
“We are determined to implement changes that uphold students’ rights to receive fair access to education, irrespective of their special needs or language differences. Every teacher entered this profession to meet students’ needs, and I am confident that all educators in Bridgeport are committed to this cause and will support our efforts to transform our students’ lives,” she said.
Bridgeport Data:
· Bridgeport is one of the lowest-performing districts in the state.
· Our English Language Arts state assessment results revealed that only 20% of our students are performing at or above grade level, while 80% of students are not performing on grade level.
· Our math state assessment results revealed that only 12% of students are performing at or above grade level, while 88% of students are not performing on grade level.
Research shows that teachers have the greatest impact on student outcomes. The district’s priorities will empower teachers with resources and unconditional support necessary to transform BPS into one of the best school districts in the state.
Heard about this on 91.1 FM yesterday. Seems that 1200 or more surveys were sent out, and half of them responded. Those showed a 97% concern by respondents in the course of the system under current leadership.
Transforming the school system with half of the professionals having “zero confidence” in leadership, necessary building infrastructure issues known to the community, numerous teachers seriously considering positions in other school systems, and the multiyear battle to increase local resources and City wide attention to student outcomes and “fair funding” are a numbing list of challenges to the Superintendent.
What is a strategy, that involves the broadest community input possible, to encourage civic participation that might also include an increase in residents, eligible and registered, to actually vote in every election as informed community members.
I participated in a Read Aloud Day at Munoz Marin School speaking to fifth graders about an ordinary citizen who started a movement to create sidewalkd “mini-libraries”. The young people had seen such in the streets of Bridgeport but were not connected with their nearest actual physical library where facts are offered in many varieties, and research to counterbalance learning and assumptions from social media can get done.
The status quo is not working. What is necessary for us as a community to move forward by actively and actually helping each other? Time will tell.
John, those varieties of facts are often coupled with a variety of issues.
We can start off with the code/identifying world of sides where one side is less informative in education and treatment, the other side, and the such, who is viewed/identified as the other coded side. Somehow, I believe the word “indeed” is such an identification word. 🙂
Understandable in some ways, what good is wearing the Yankee pinstripe uniform without those who wear the Dodgers uniform?
We have the natural biological wiring in the brain, perhaps induced on a much higher dimension form of identification, like it, the “wiring” that generates a larger, 🍆 decode people, decode Zeus Don’t despair God was doing you a solid where you want to stuff that 🍆 🤣

Packet teachers
dilapidated schools, though I believe the Port has been moving in the right direction on that front.
Lack of Tech in the teaching process to aid teachers and students
Concerning the overall Numbers that make Bridgeport one of the lowest-performing districts in the state. That has been a constant for decades. that seemed to set well with the teachers as long as they weren’t inconvenient.
Perhaps Mama Bear, LV, and Gen Now can host a forum with the teachers, representative, the BBOE, and another representative to outline their concerns and recommendations to up the numbers. Personally, I would implement the reasonable ones that have a direct impact on students’ education and scores. Other Bridgeport is one of the lowest-performing districts in the state. hat time ⌚ classes with started. Then reconvene that following year to see the results. JS
Somehow, I believe there are more than the students besides interest, coded/side speaking, going on. What say you Port?
P.S OIB is the best ESL class ever. 🙂

The prophet’s brain has to be wired pretty well to remember 1500 word songs, not to mention recall of every song, sung.

Motion people motion.
Our universe has four dimensions length, width, height, and time. Time is not relative more than it is a beginning and end. The makeup of our four-dimension universe, time being one of them, is the universe in more a Klein bottle oval shape, with no beginning or end, inside or outside.
The outer ledge is similar to black hole matter where what is drawn in at its end universe life/time is absorbed, transported back, for lack of a better word, to the “Big Bang” beginning, of time. on the quantum wave existence/element. Thus, the Big Bang is as continuous as the universe.
It’s our universe in motion that creates if gravitational pull on the celestial body within it, not the distortion of the fabric of space, or a made-up graviton element/particle. Thus the similarities to the formation of galaxies in our universe and hurricanes on Earth due to Earth’s rotation.
While time travel is not possible, interstellar travel is, based on the physics of the universe’s fourth dimension, time. Or should one say timeless wormholes in the fourth dimension, transported in space?
Prove me wrong fellow physicisings 🤣
