City Councilman Ernie Newton pitched Stratford’s Democratic Town Committee this week about his viability to return to the seat he held 20 years ago in his challenge of freshman State Senator Herron Gaston who won the Stratford vote handily in 2022 over incumbent Dennis Bradley.
Connecticut’s 23rd Senatorial covers about two thirds of Bridgeport and a portion of western Stratford. Newton spent his early years in Stratford prior to moving to Bridgeport.
For Newton this is his second crack running for his old seat. He came close in 2012 losing a tight three-way Dem primary against incumbent Ed Gomes and winner Andres Ayala. Newton pulled off a surprise convention endorsement, running on a redemption theme shortly after returning to Bridgeport following incarceration stemming from his public corruption conviction.
Gaston will win the endorsement for the scheduled May 14 convention, the larger question: will Newton secure the 15 percent convention delegate support required to qualify for the August primary? If not, he must navigate the petition signature route.
Gaston’s in strong shape to qualify for a $110,000 public campaign grant under Connecticut’s Citizens Election Program of funded races. Newton is barred from public money as a result of his conviction so he’s raising it the old-fashioned way seeking larger personal donations with $1,000 the maximum personal contribution.
Newton will likely be outspent 2 to 1 so he’s counting on his name recognition in the district to keep the race within reach.
This is the first time early voting will be in play for state legislative races. Early voting will take place August 5 – 11 in advance of the August 13 primary, according to the state’s election calendar.
The only other primary on the horizon for the city’s nine-member state legislative delegation is City Councilwoman Eneida Martinez challenging incumbent Andre Baker in the 124th Assembly covering the largely East End/East Side Dunbar, Harding, Beardsley and JFK precincts.
Of course he needs to reach out to Stratford, he has very few Bridgeport donors if you look at his donor list. But they also arn’t from Stratford. They are from all over the place which reflects lack of focused support. If you replace every time he says Stratford with Bridgeport no one would no the difference. You can also replace his speech with Derby and it could work as a template for anyone in the Valley. It’s a very generic and trite speech that tells his story (ignores his previous political corruption) and everyone looks bored.
That white hat seems off. John is that a code thing he got going on a way to influence, connect, like hooray for our side? If so has the game moved past those who are informed to just black and white, racially speaking?
They always say God is on our side, but have they ever asked if they are on God’s side? The way I see it, if you are not on God’s side who side are you on?

Moses said he had been in the game for a while, I was just wondering if that hat has meaning, it seems off,
Good luck Port, it seems you are just the field in the game, one of many JS

P.S. The way I see it, it seems Moses of the Port, Provit away from his BML mantra gurb. 🤣
I depart with the Prophet. Who is on the Prophet’s side, and more importantly, who/side is against the Prophet?

Good job people,
John, BTW if Moses of the Port is sporting that white hat to identify with a certain team/side or group of people, and the lies buried in the Library can’t the term “White Supremacy” mean team/side “White” is superior, then let’s say team/side “Black” but not along the racial lines of White and Black, to those infromed?
Johnny Cash wants to know. 🙃

What say you, Moses? Any particular reason you’re sporting a white hat?
Just a theory, John. I like theories. Especially the Big Bang Theory, #extra-special Bazinga! 🤣

My bad, Bazinga. 🙃

Speaking of hats it would be cool if the fedoras came back into style. I wouldn’t mind sporting a fedora. Or perhaps move to Texas and sport a Cowboy 🤠 hat.

My guess is you can do that dance in an Ascot cap too.

Come to think about it. Does any of these hats, outside color hold any meaning? 🙂
