Republicans For Gomes? GOP Leader “Livid” Over Deceptive Mailer

Republican leader and former mayoral candidate Anthony Minutolo received mail on Monday he was not expecting:  propaganda purporting “REPUBLICANS FOR JOHN GOMES.”

“It came in a plain white envelope with no return address and was postmarked New York, New York,” says Minutolo, Republican deputy registrar. “The Bridgeport Republican Town Committee has endorsed David Herz as its candidate for Mayor. Please note that there is no attribution at the bottom of the page. There is no “Republicans for John Gomes,” recorded  with the SEEC . Members of my party are livid over this piece including myself.”

Gomes, who’s challenging in court Mayor Joe Ganim’s 251-vote Democratic primary win, is the mayoral candidate of the Bridgeport Independent Party Nov. 7.

The party responsible for issuing the mailer did not disclose attribution, as required by Connecticut law. The letter features the boilerplate language found on Gomes’ Facebook, web pages and other brochures.

The Gomes campaign is short on cash less than two weeks from the general election after a mighty spend for the primary.

It is also more than two weeks late filing a campaign finance report for the period ending September 30. A fine will be issued by the Town Clark’s Office and/or the State Elections Enforcement Commission depending on the length of delay. Gomes treasurer Maria Figueroa is responsible to pay the fine.

Not exactly a credential for a campaign trumpeting “transparency.”

  1. As a current eligible, registered, and unaffiliated Bridgeport voter I am aware of currents in the several campaigns ongoing in the City. So I sympathize with Mr. Minutolo as an active Republican in Bridgeport. He leads a party of perhaps 5,000 registered and seems to have left the newcomer, David Herz, an attorney in the city, on his own to “meet and greet” the public and ask for their votes and make a statement supported by Bridgeport Republican resident activists that lets folks know not just that they oppose the incumbent, but why they will bring about better governance and results.

Political watchers know that this type of false news, failing to acknowledge the cowards who penned it, and paid for it, is merely a “corrupt” activity that would not be the effort of an “honest family man”.
If somone drops pollutants in the water system they are likely public terrorists and should be investigated and charged. But the BS goes beyond fun and perhaps legislators need to look at systemis corruption, as it appears in the City election process this year and create higher barriers to the sowing of distrust on the system that encourages voters to stay away from the voting process. Time will tell.
