Democratic mayoral candidate John Gomes on Tuesday filed a court challenge to Mayor Joe Ganim’s primary win by 251 votes, seeking…
..1. An order declaring that Gomes prevailed in the primary of September 12, 2023, and an order placing him on the ballot for the November general election; or 2. An order scheduling a new primary; and 3. Such other relief to which the plaintiff is entitled at law or in equity..
Forget the request Gomes “prevailed.” That’s perfunctory legal language in pursuit of a Hail Mary. Seeking a new primary a different query.
Gomes is represented by veteran election attorney Bill Bloss who filed a thin court complaint with the expectation of more meat on the bones.
So, the first line of business sets up both legal and public relations repercussions. Plaintiff wants:
1. Video records of all activities at absentee ballot drop boxes from the date that absentee ballots were first available, August 22, 2023, through the date of the primary, September 12, 2023.
Bloss, a mighty fine lawyer, cares nothing about public relations in the larger picture. He wants all video footage providing ammunition to persuade a judge someone stuffed the ballot box illegally against his client’s interests.
Okay, the video footage disclosed may also produce examples of Gomes’s political operatives doing the very same things alleged against his opponent in this court challenge. That enters the public relations side.
So, what we have, a mixed flow of legal and public relation wars that both matter to decide an outcome.
The relative court complaint:
On September 12, 2022, a Democratic primary was held to select the nominee of the Democratic Party for the office of mayor for the City of Bridgeport.
Defendant Joseph Ganim and Gomes were the candidates in that primary.
Election officials on September 14, 2023, reported that Ganim received 4212 votes and Gomes 3961, a margin of 251. That report was a ruling of an election official in connection with a primary for purposes of Conn. Gen. Stat. § 9-329a.
Ganim received 1545 votes by absentee ballots and Gomes received 851 votes by absentee ballots.
On September 15, 2023, Gomes was made aware of a video recording maintained by the City of Bridgeport that appears to show a person who is not an election official and who should not possess absentee ballots except her own depositing what appears to be multiple 2 absentee ballots in the drop box at 999 Broad Street on September 5, 2023, at about 6:30 a.m. after exiting the building.
Another video shows another person exiting from the same building and also depositing what appears to be absentee ballots into that drop box.
Gomes is aggrieved of rulings of election officials, there has been a mistake in the count of the votes, and he is aggrieved by violations of the provisions of the Connecticut General Statutes governing the casting of absentee ballots, in one or more of the following respects: a. Absentee ballots were counted in violation of Conn. Gen. Stat. § 9-l 40b( a) in that they were deposited in ballot drop boxes by someone other than the ballot applicant or the designee of a ballot applicant allowed by statute. b. On information and belief voters were provided with and cast absentee ballots who did not personally sign the application for an absentee ballot, in violation of Conn. Gen. Stat. § 9-140(a). c. On information and belief voters who were provided with and cast absentee ballots were assisted by representatives of a campaign who failed to record on the absentee ballot application the fact of his or her assistance, in violation of Conn. Gen. Stat. § 9140(a). 3 d. Absentee ballots were counted in violation of Conn. Gen. Stat. § 9-140b( a)( 4) in that they were returned by a member of the immediate family of an applicant without delivering them in person to the clerk. 14. As a result of the foregoing, alone or in combination, the reliability of the result of the election is seriously in doubt.
“Forget the pursuit of the Hail Mary” the true Hail Mary is the Row A candidates and their supporters adding conjecture and whataboutisms to any post regarding the blatant obvious video captured theft of an election.
An unbiased headline should’ve read “Gomes Files Legal Complaint”. If and when you get anything that is substantiated and material that should stand as it’s own article.
Stay tuned, Joe. But your bias is okay, right?
Absolutely, IT I OK. I am not a blogger nor a journalist. I am a supporter of a candidate. I have no code of ethics that suggests that I should maintain neutrality, when I am commenting in the media or on a blog.
What? You’re commenting on a blog but, you are not a blogger. One thing is for sure: YOU’RE FULL OF SHIT!
Lennie, wait for it! OIB is a webzine, I’m a webziner.
No you’re just an idiot Joel.
Joe IS (as he said) a biased commentator, just like you and me. Lennie acts like a journalist running a political blog and to be neutral like a journalist should be, but really he does the work of Joe and Mario. So, we all express our opinions/or biases, and we all are sure we’re right, including Lennie.
Traber The Hater, who knighted you editorial policy chief of OIB? Neutrality? You’re delusional. Every scribe on the planet is biased. The question is are they fair? Your campaign camp should be doing cartwheels for my reporting on Gen Now’s conflicted relationship with Marilyn Moore against state law. If I had not weighed in Gen Now would have helped her secure the signatures for the primary, instead of keeping a distance, splitting up the anti-vote handing Ganim the walk-in vote.
Traber, you’re part of the same hypocrisy as everyone else in city politics. Gomes, Ricci, Bartlett-Josie and a whole bunch of others were once Joe and Mario people, and all on the payroll. None of this is about the kids, the schools, and yadda, yadda, yadda. It’s all about control and power, the key to the candy store. They all were friends and now they’re political enemies. That happens in politics. Your side excavated nearly 800 absentees led by a contingent of desperados who also cut corners. Soon, that story will also come to light.
Gomes may very well win, we’ll see how this shakes out. One thing is for sure, if that happens Gomes cannot deliver the millions extra he’s pledging for schools to secure your support without a massive tax increase.
Somewhere along the way you received a blood transfusion from Donald Trump.
Rob Trabe, now I’m an asshole eh? You’re still the same power-hungry, stubborn, spoiled prick. Look who you’re rolling with these days: Pereira, Dennis Bradley, John Ricci… Do the City a BIG favor and just fucking retire once and for all.
“On September 15, 2023, Gomes was made aware of a video recording maintained by the City of Bridgeport…”
How do you know or what makes you think this is accurate or true, Lennie?
John Gomes knew about this video the very same day and at least 1 hour from the time it was recorded or captured by the camera. It was planned and its capture was anticipated. The Gomes Camp held a press conference the same day Pereira was caught on video doing her thing–this was on 09/05, the same day Geter was captured on video.
The tone and confidence expressed in this press conference clearly signals that the Gomes camp had something BIG. Excuse me Lennie, I’m smelling something…
It is not that people don’t seek or want biases they just find fought when it goes against their own biases.
Joe, while it may be biased in a sense, it’s a valid perspective to assume an open supporter of Gomes’s camp was captured on video doing some questionable nefarious shit at those ballot boxes.
Hence the caption.
“Gomes Files Legal Complaint With Potential Public Relations Blowback”
I mean this is Port politics. Does anyone honestly not think that Gen Now’s 20,000 AB mail drive wasn’t nefarious in nature, please, legal, but nefarious? Come on people, @unbias 🙂
Don’t get me wrong they can spit some shit that sounds like they are the Holy Mary and Port’s/democracy salvation. 🙂 Never mind a Hail Mary. JS
I don’t think they did a 20000 AB drive for Moore four years ago. They surely didn’t create a drive for her signatures to get on the ballot this time around. 🙂

Stuffed Gate continues!
Stuffed and Cuffed
Grin, when will they all see the light?
It’s so quiet 3 1/2 out of 4 years in Bridgeport nary a peep or a public sighting of G2 you almost forget there’s politics in the BPort.
Joel, I did NOT call you an asshole. I said you were an idiot because you misrepresented what Joe S said. We are all biased, including Lennie.
Lennie, a “Hater” because I think you’ve been doing Joe G and Mario’s work? I guess that’s fair. I do agree with you about the American delusion of impartial journalism, and I don’t think expressing an opinion that includes you makes me the OIB Editorial Policy Chief nor do I think I could handle it anyway. I only offer my two bits once in a while. As to my hypocrisy, I dont know how to be involved in Bpt politics without finding myself working with people who have been accused (falsely or with merit), all I can do is monitor myself. I’m confident that Gomes will do better for BPS than Ganim has and realize that’s a very low bar!
Fair enough. Thank you.
