News release from Mayor’s Office:
Mayor Ganim is more than frustrated to report that two days after Storm Isaias 8,100 Bridgeport customers of United Illuminating remain without power outage. Many also lost, and may still be without, WiFi service as well. The Emergency Operations Center received more than 300 calls for service due to downed wires, fallen trees, wire fires, and storm related incidents that were attended to by Bridgeport Fire Department, Police, and Public Facilities responders.
City response activity and available emergency resources include:
— Residents in need of emergency shelter, contact the American Red Cross at 1-877-287-3327 for assistance. Residents in need of generator hire can visit https://expertgeneratorhire.co.uk/
— All city parks remain closed until further notice due to damage.
— Bridgeport Public Schools that participate in the meal program will continue to distribute meals.
— At this time Wilbur Cross, and Blackham School do NOT have power, and therefore no meals provided.
— Charging stations are also available outside of seven school locations. Click here for more detail.
— The Health Department continues to assess COVID-19 protocols to prevent the spread of the disease.
— Social Services is assisting residents impacted by the storm by connecting them to the appropriate agencies to address needs.
— Many traffic lights at major intersections remain affected by power outages. Residents are reminded to drive cautiously, observe portable stop signs, adhere to direction from traffic control personnel and Bridgeport Police.
RESIDENTS, are asked to report any uninsured damages to the Bridgeport EOC at 203-579-3829 or apply online here. This information will be provided to FEMA to document loss, damage, and any City of Bridgeport need for financial assistance.
Mayor Ganim stated, “Public Facilities and emergency services have received and are still responding to hundreds of calls. If you see downed lines or fallen trees that have yet to be addressed, please put your safety first by not engaging with the hazard–be patient.”
The Mayor further explained that, “we are fortunate that there was no loss of life or any noted physical injuries to residents, responders or work crews in City of Bridgeport related to Storm Isaias. We made it through the storm. At this point its UI’s poor response to restore power that is endangering the health and welfare of our residents.”
