In a wild and crazy Wednesday night video-teleconference meeting John Weldon returned as chair of the Board of Education following an acrimonious 25 minutes of confusion. Former Chair Jessica Martinez tried stalling the vote, Chris Taylor dropped out of the meeting in frustration while Vice Chair Hernan Illingworth at times looked haggard trying to keep the peace.
The first motion made to delay the vote failed. Then came the vote to name a new chair, a position vacant since the board dumped Martinez as board leader four weeks ago, citing her personal issues, after just a few months.
Weldon received votes from himself, Joe Sokolovic, Sybil Allen and Joseph Lombard. Albert Benejan voted no. Illingworth and board secretary Bobbi Brown abstained.
Board bylaws allow a majority vote among those present to select officers.
