Selma Miriam and Noel Furie founded Bloodroot in 1977, two culinary ambassadors that made the destination a landmark at the end of Ferris Street along Black Rock Harbor. They touched the pleasure centers of thousands with their groundbreaking feminist-bookstore-vegan restaurant concept enriching both brain and belly.
But it was much more than that, a gathering spot for women to share freedom of expression, ideas and civic points of view that didn’t always sit well with government authority.
I was a raw scribe with the Bridgeport Post and Telegram, predecessor papers of the Connecticut Post, when Bloodroot launched against the odds, financial institutions leery to back a revolutionary concept led by female ownership.
The restaurant has been been chronicled by scores of national publications. And now it’s become cinematic, a feature documentary directed by Annie Laurie Medonis debuting June 22nd at this week’s 38th Connecticut LGBTQ Film Festival in Hartford.
Bloodroot is now the oldest and longest lasting of them, in continuous operation for over 46 years. This remarkable documentary examines Bloodroot’s history, its place in American feminist thought, its impact on the local community, and why Bloodroot is more than just a restaurant.
Selma pass away in February, but saw the completed version in November and loved it.
How great was that!
