The 2021 budget year starting July 1 is expected to include revaluation of taxable property which can be a dicey proposition for bean counters and taxpayers under normal circumstances. Throw in the impact of a health emergency influencing the course of development projects and revenue collections and now what?
The city is searching for a tax assessor, according to its website job postings, as well as many other municipal positions. The tax assessor position reports to Finance Director Ken Flatto.
The last municipal revaluation, Joe Ganim’s return to the mayoralty, was five years ago when some neighborhoods, Black Rock in particular, were walloped in the wallet. Ganim has not raised taxes the past four years as millions more in new revenue swelled the city’s grand list led by PSEG’s new power plant in the South End.
Reval is mandated by state law every five years. Ganim’s predecessor Bill Finch delayed reval, requiring state legislative approval, to avoid a tax bite in his 2015 reelection year. Ganim defeated Finch in a primary on his way to a general election victory. Ganim implemented the delayed reval in 2016.
