Voter Registration Deadline Looms

Friday noon is the deadline to register to vote by mail or online for Wednesday’s primary. The final in-person deadline to register to vote for Wednesday is noon on Tuesday at the Registrar’s Office 999 Broad Street Downtown. Unaffiliated voters have until that same final deadline of September 15 at noon to enroll in a major party in-person if they want to vote in the primary, according to Connecticut Secretary of the State Denise Merrill.

In addition to high-volume absentee ballot activity, election workers have stacks of new registrations to record before the primary.

The 2015 municipal primaries take place on a Wednesday this year instead of the usual Tuesday due to the occurrence of Labor Day on Monday September 7 and the coincidence of the following Tuesday with the Jewish holiday of Rosh Hashanah, says Merrill. Connecticut state law prohibits a primary from taking place the day after Labor Day, and also bars a primary from taking place on a religious holiday which the tenets of a religion forbid secular activity, directing the primary to occur the following day. Polls will open from 6 a.m. until 8 p.m.

Absentee ballots that could figure prominently in the primary must be received by the Town Clerk’s Office no later than 8 p.m. on Wednesday.

  1. Now let’s see.
Piles of voter registration forms to be entered into the computer. Hmmm …
Maybe they’ll be entered by Tuesday so when they go to vote it will be OK but some candidates will never know they existed until election day itself.
