More than 500 volunteers from Our Family Foundation by Stop & Shop, the City of Bridgeport, organizers from KaBOOM! and residents of the Bridgeport community joined forces on Thursday, September 18, to give area kids the childhood they deserve by building a new playground at Shell St. The design is based on children’s drawings created at a special design event in July.
The new playground will bring thousands of kids in Bridgeport one step closer to having the childhood they deserve. As an urban area where there is not enough play space in backyards, it is important for children to have a safe and fun place to play. This prevents children from finding outlets in places such as parking lots, streets, and other unsafe areas where they might otherwise play and socialize.Our Family Foundation by Stop & Shop supports KaBOOM! in promoting and protecting a child’s right to active play at home, at school and in the community. Additionally, Our Family Foundation by Stop & Shop is proud to say that this playground will incorporate some new equipment not found in other area playgrounds as well as equipment for special needs children such as a sway swing designed for children with Autism. The space will also include plenty of shade and seating for parents and grandparents while their children enjoy the playground as well as a garden and planters to beautify the area. A playground is more than a playground. It’s a brain-expander, friend-maker, and muscle-builder. Play is central to a child’s ability to grow into a productive adult. It can transform children from sedentary, bored and solitary to physically, mentally and socially active.
