UConn-Courant Poll Shows Women Gravitating To Obama

A poll released today by the University of Connecticut and Hartford Courant shows Barack Obama with a slim three-point lead nationally over Mitt Romney. In Connecticut, Obama leads by 14 points. A number of battleground states will decide the race. From Chris Keating, Hartford Courant:

With women rallying to the Democrats, President Barack Obama holds a slim, 3-point lead nationwide over Republican Mitt Romney as Election Day approaches, according to a new University of Connecticut/Hartford Courant poll.

Obama leads by 48 percent to 45 percent, with only 6 percent undecided in the national poll of 1,023 randomly selected likely voters. The poll has a margin of error of plus or minus 3 percentage points.

With the margin of error factored in, the national race is essentially a dead heat.

“It’s close, and we’re seeing a significant gender gap here with women breaking for the president by 55 percent to 38 percent,” said Jennifer Necci Dineen, the poll director. “It’s significant. We’re seeing that reflected in our own state [in Connecticut]. Both the national conversation and the conversation in Connecticut has been directed toward women–not just women’s issues. Clearly, all of that works. It’s having an impact.”

Those issues include the candidates’ views on abortion, contraception, and equal pay for equal work, among others.

Although men and women do not vote in a monolithic fashion, the poll showed differences between the genders overall. Dineen said that abortion is a priority for some men, but that it is a far greater concern for women. At the same time, predicting how women will vote is not an exact science because some are pro-life and some are pro-choice.

“I’m sure men care about women’s issues, but they may not be motivated to vote on them,” Dineen said.

In Connecticut, Obama leads Romney by 51 percent to 37 percent overall, with leads among men, women, those over the age of 50, college graduates, and those with post-graduate education and less than a high school education. The gender gap is even larger in Connecticut than nationally. Although Obama leads by 17 percentage points among women nationally, he leads among women in Connecticut by 26 percentage points.

  1. No … sorry Ralph. There’s an even chance Romney may even win Connecticut. Go to Rassmussen or Gallup. Obama’s campaign is imploding due to the screw-up on foreign policy as to Benghazi and the inability to do anything but blame the previous administration on the morass of the economy. How’s gas pricing in Connecticut compared to four years ago?

      1. How detached are you from the reality of economics, foreign affairs, and security of our country???
Gas prices are more than doubled and more so in Connecticut. Gov. Malloy has just increased taxation by over $1 Billion. The “stimulus package” has not produced any positive economic adjustment. Both GM and Chrysler should have been allowed to declare bankruptcy in order to reorganize and renegotiate the impossible union contracts that are bleeding the auto manufacturing industry. The waste of money for Solyndra (a big Obama donor) and the lithium battery manufacturer in Michigan that just went belly up is extraordinary. The government has no business in private industry. We are the laughing stock of the international community and have thrown our only true ally in the Middle East under the proverbial bus. Obama went campaigning in Las Vegas, appeared on several TV talk shows, and basically spun the excuse of some obscure video that came out in July and had no merit as being the cause of the rioting and subsequent killing of an ambassador on U.S. soil in a foreign country. The list goes on and on.
WE NEED A LEVEL-HEADED BUSINESSMAN TO RUN THIS COUNTRY AND LESSEN THE BURDEN OF AN OVER-BLOATED FEDERAL GOVERNMENT!!! We don’t need a community organizer with no legislative background and no business experience who surrounds himself with the corrupt politics of Chicago.
The mantra of “are you better off than four years ago” applies here. The answer to that mantra is NO!!!

  2. *** Fact of the matter is regardless of the slow inconsistent attention to some major details in the federal government by the Obama Admin. and the unwilling non-bipartisan working Republicans, overall, four years is not enough time by any stretch of the imagination to fix all of the major problems (of which many were created during the Bush years) Obama inherited during his watch! The Republicans seem to want many of the same things the Dems want but their ideas on how to go about it seem whack and out of touch with the real America. They look at everything in black and white terms and don’t seem to acknowledge the “gray!” Anyway as we get closer to the actual election date, Obama will not only secure the black man’s vote and minorities in general, our “black & white” president will secure the white women’s vote as well. And good old boy Mitt who still to this day does not admit having Mexican blood will secure the loser’s spot picking up votes from the sleepy midwest, Trump and his barber and proud America’s Tea Party! *** HERE WE GO! ***

    1. Mitt’s father was born in Mexico and even though he ran for President, wasn’t eligible … Romney’s grandfather took his family there to escape the problems of the Mormon belief in plural marriage even though in a singular committed marriage. The Romneys are of white ancestry from England and Ireland, not Mexican heritage.
