The Potential Conga Line For Mayor

Following last Tuesday’s drubbing of Democratic Party endorsed candidates for school board and City Council, opposition forces as well as establishment Dems are looking to the 2015 mayoral cycle and speculating about possible challengers to Mayor Bill Finch. What names are floating as possible contenders? Mary-Jane Foster, who challenged Finch in a 2011 mayoral primary, John Gomes, who was also in the field for a while, former Mayor John Fabrizi and Judge of Probate Paul Ganim.

Mary-Jane Foster
Mary-Jane Foster

Foster hasn’t gone to sleep following her primary effort in 2011. She was part of the organized opposition that defeated endorsed Dems on primary Tuesday. Foster showed in 2011 she can raise the money to wage a competitive race. Will the University of Bridgeport executive ramp up her campaign earlier this time?

Gomes, who served as Finch’s deputy chief administrative officer in charge of the government-efficiency CitiStat program before a falling-out with the mayor, was a primary challenger in 2011 before dropping out of the race to support Foster. His Red Rooster deli was the scene of the challenge-slate victory party last Tuesday. Money-challenged in 2011, will he be better financed if he gets in? Did Gomes lose an opportunity to raise his profile by not seeking election to the City Council? Gomes says he’s poised for another run.

“I remain strongly focused on the vision I had during my campaign. I believe in Bridgeport and the great future that lies ahead. Its political shift beginning with the Charter revision vote and most recent results from the primary demonstrates the strength of the unified voters. We have a long way to go as a community to achieve political equality and remove the selfishness and self greed that has plagued this Bridgeport. We must continue on this strategic path with one voter at a time.”

John Gomes
Will John Gomes try again?

John Fabrizi has been talking to party regulars about a political comeback. Fabs’ political career has been based largely on the party machinery, such as it is. A challenger today cannot afford to sit back and wait for the party to run into his open arms. Can he show strength by building coalitions independent of the party regulars? And can he raise money?

John Fabrizi
John Fabrizi misses the job.

Paul Ganim, brother of former mayor Joe, has served as probate judge for 15 years, a peachy elected position overseeing the administration of estates, trust funds, child custody matters and conservatorships that lends itself to helping people and making friends. He’s up for another four-year term next year. The job pays roughly $110,000 annually. Probate judges, unlike judges for Connecticut’s Superior, Appellate and Supreme courts nominated by the governor and approved by the legislature, can maintain private practices and are only required to work 20 hours a week although the court is open for 40 hours. If Paul Ganim wins reelection he’s set up seemingly for a free run for mayor with a four-year term locked in, but the code of conduct for probate judges places limits on solicitation of funds for campaign purposes. Could he take a leave of absence from the probate court to get around that?

Paul Ganim

Finch will be well financed for reelection. He has already raised more than $100k. If last Tuesday’s primary results were a referendum on his mayoralty, he has two years to turn things around. Will Steel Point become a reality? Will a replacement for Harding High School be built? Can he avoid tax increases the next two budget cycles?

A multi-primary field could be advantage Finch, depending on the candidates, with challengers splitting up the anti vote.

  1. How about Auden Grogins for mayor? Oh, wait:
Ripped from the headlines of the CT Post:
BRIDGEPORT — Less than a month after he was given a suspended sentence for three felony charges, an 18-year-old city man was charged Monday with murdering another man last week in the city’s North End.
On Aug. 19, Rogers pleaded guilty to racketeering, conspiracy and sale of narcotics charges. He received a suspended sentence and was placed on five years’ probation.
During the sentencing hearing in that case, state prosecutors urged the judge to send Rogers–who was already on juvenile probation–to prison. But Rogers’ lawyer, Bridgeport state Rep. Auden Grogins, argued at the time that Rogers had no background of violence.
Grogins acknowledged that man she defended and the man arrested Monday are the same person. She declined to comment further.

    1. Hmmm, interesting idea, Bob. What about Grogins for Mayor? She does not have a drug problem, nor does she have a history of domestic violence. Put her face in this post and take out Fabs and Ganim, and the citizens of Bridgeport have an unbelievably great menu of Democrats to choose from. GREAT IDEA!!!

    2. I think Auden Grogins can kiss any political office in Bridgeport goodbye. The Pettway family lives in my neighborhood. I do feel bad in the sense Grogins has to deal with the fact although an obviously good attorney, she was able to convince the Judge another shame, overriding both Prosecutors who had ample info to put the kid away. Well life is a series of choices and decisions, these are the ramifications.

  2. And did Finch come to Auden’s defense?

Finch commended police for making an arrest within a week of Pettway’s death. But he expressed surprise on hearing that Rogers had recently been released from custody.

“I don’t know the conditions of that case,” Finch said. “All I know is that as mayor, I’ve got to keep people safe. The more of these hoodlums that are locked up, the better we’re going to be.”

  3. ONE MINORITY
Only one person who represents the population of the city.
One person who speaks all the languages of the majority of our city.
One person who is a business owner and has college degrees who can show our youth what can be, if you work hard and fly right you can accomplish anything.
One person who understands and lives the city of Bridgeport from a minority view and can reach for the city’s highest position.
If people really want change, there is real change and they should put their money where their mouths are and fund Gomes.

  4. BTW, if Gomes needed to raise his profile running for city council, why didn’t Foster have to run for council to raise her profile and city government knowledge?
    DOUBLE STANDARD

    1. Chosen, Foster has already proven she can raise money. As a result of that and running citywide against Finch she has a higher profile than Gomes. You obviously are a big John Gomes supporter. That’s fine. What will John Gomes do differently this time to raise money for a citywide run? A seat on the council would have raised his profile and with it a nice platform to be a big pain in the ass to the establishment. It would have enhanced fundraising opportunities. Now if he has a rich uncle that’s a different story.

  5. Fabrizi will win if voter apathy returns which I don’t think will happen. I don’t see Fredo making a splash. Foster could succeed as well as Gomes. Nose to nose, money notwithstanding, Gomes prevails over MJF. Both are perfectly qualified. I think we are going to see serious FBI pronouncements coming soon. The Finch/Testa/Timpanelli clique will not look good opening doors for others.

    1. Oh poor yahooy, you really are an idiot. Sorry, but the truth hurts. Fabrizi. I like him but the ship has sailed. The rest of your handicapping is just plain ridiculous. The good news for you is I am not running and going to sit back and watch other people like yourself work to get your candidate elected. I’d put my money on Finch if I had any. I still believe MJF was an excellent choice. I really like John Gomes. In the end, honestly, does anyone believe a Ganim has a chance? John Fabrizi ain’t gonna happen. But it helps him negotiate his next job with the arty faithful. I predict a stunning victory for Finch. My best friend and idol. Lmao rofl! Btw had the best Brazilian food twice last week at Pantanel on Frank Street. It’s always nice patronizing ethnic restaurants in every corner of the City knowing I will not run into any aspiring candidate. EVER!

        1. Oh altar boy, give it a break. yahooy, you cannot insult others and not expect to get a dose yourself. I notice for an ex altar boy you neglected to wish the new Bishop well. Class act that you are.

          0
          1. Thank you. I did so in person at the recent Investiture luncheon. He asked me to tell you he appreciates your kindness, but he’s not hiring.

            0
          2. yahooy yahooy yahooy, you are such a silly fool. I am certain the Bishop appreciates my kind words as I am sure although you were an altar boy you were definitely not at the event. lololololol you are a foolish woman. My best wishes to the Bishop did not need a negative comment from a jealous woman.

  6. Hey Bob,
Cheshire murderer Joshua Komisarjevsky likes her.

Bridgeport attorney Auden Grogins, who also serves as a state representative of the 129th, was paid $16,163.45 after representing Komisarjevsky for a short time following his arrest.

    Gene Bontatibus likes her.
Defense Cites Lack Of Evidence In Blaze That Killed Firefighter
March 15, 2000|By COLIN POITRAS; Courant Staff Writer
NEW HAVEN — Arson experts never pinpointed the precise cause of the 1996 fire that killed a Branford firefighter, a weakness defense attorneys attacked Tuesday during closing arguments in the arson-murder trial of Anthony “Gene” Bontatibus.
“You can’t decide this case on what you don’t know,” said Auden Grogins, a special public defender representing Bontatibus.
“No one can be sure what caused the fire …” Grogins said. “There was no compelling evidence, no gas can left at the scene and no traces of gasoline or accelerant on the defendant’s clothing.”

    Riki Rogers likes her.
But Rogers’ lawyer in that case, Bridgeport state Rep. Auden Grogins, argued at the time that Rogers had no background of violence.

Hey! The good people of the 129th like her.

    1. Jim Fox,
I have to admit I get tired of the haters on the OIB site. May I remind you a person is presumed innocent until they
are proven guilty. Auden had the stones to represent the defendants in these controversial cases other lawyers would run away from. I grudgingly admit she had the backbone to accept these daunting challenges. Maybe we could use someone to back up their words with action. It might be the breath of fresh air that’s missing in Bpt.

      0
      1. Sorry, Ronin. You are wrong. State Rep Auden Grogins does not get to claim she is the great protector of quality of life in the city of Bridgeport with her massage parlor legislation and then claim there is nothing wrong with arguing for no jail time for a convicted felon who goes out and kills innocent people.
You cannot be both. If you want to be a state rep and deal with quality of life issues then give up the criminal defense work.
If you really like the criminal defense work because you believe even the most savage of criminals are worthy of your legal skills then give up the state rep job.
Making decisions is part of life. Believing you are entitled to whatever you want is part of Bridgeport Democratic politics.

        0
      2. Ronin, Let me make myself perfectly clear, I hate no one. I was raised as a Catholic at St. Peter’s School and Church, and a Boy Scout at St. Anthony’s Church in the West End of Bridgeport. Hate was never in my vocabulary. Maybe you have the wrong blog? This is Only in Bridgeport. No one hates here, Ronin!

“No one is born hating another person because of the color of his skin or his background, or his religion. People must learn to hate, and if they can learn to hate, they can be taught to love, for Love comes more naturally to the human heart then its opposite.”–Nelson Mandela.

    2. With reference to Atty. Grogins–As a public defender, unless there is a conflict of interest, you don’t have the luxury of picking and choosing your cases, the cases are assigned to you. Like it or not, you must defend your client (albeit repulsive) to the best of your ability.

      0
      1. Auden Grogins is not a public defender. She is a special public defender. She is not full time. She takes on cases when they are offered. She has her own private practice.
But to my point, if she were a full-time member of the public defenders’ office, I would not want her serving as my state representative. I do not want her to have a full-time excuse as to why she is getting criminals out of jail.
And by the way, this punk was arrested by the state special task force on street gangs. He pleaded guilty to three charges which means he faced far more. And one of the charges was racketeering. He was no altar boy. He is a cold-blooded killer.

        0
        1. Oh mea culpa … I forgot to include the word “special” and I am aware she is in private practice. Unfortunately Mr. Walsh, the law states a person is innocent before being proven guilty and has a right to a fair trial. I agree he is a cold-blooded killer, but the law is the law. On the other side of the coin, she is a very competent attorney and an equally competent state representative. In fact, compared to the other members of Bridgeport’s delegation, she is the crème de la crème.

          0
          1. Godiva2011, you’re so full of shit.

First you write: “Unfortunately Mr. Walsh, the law states a person is innocent before being proven guilty and has a right to a fair trial.”

Then you state: “I agree he is a cold-blooded killer …”

Was that a fair trial on your part? It sure was a “speedy” trial.

            0
        2. Taken from an earlier post: “Personally, I believe any distrust, animosity or feelings that Auden is “soft on crime” because of her work as a defense attorney is misdirected and unfair.”

Bob, please let me know what votes Auden has cast in Hartford that demonstrate her work as a defense attorney has influenced her work as a state legislator.

          0
          1. Law-practicing State Representatives make, preserve, and strike down laws to make money. John, the question here is her work as a defense attorney and the impact her request for leniency for her clients has had on the community.

I’d like to read the pre-sentencing report on Rogers and details of the racketeering charges. Surely, Auden and the court should have considered the role he played during the racket and his relationship to any dangerous group or individuals involved in the racket.

            0
  7. Excuse me, but why are we ignoring Andre Baker? Andre was the top vote getter in the Board of Ed primary. He has run for citywide office AND WON. He gave up a safe seat on the City Council and was not afraid to take a big step forward. And he is a new face in the mayoral shuffle.
So Lennie, why no mention of Andre Baker???

    0
  8. It’s amazing Ms. Grogins can keep her name out of the news. Even more amazing, so many are blind to what she does for a living. I know she gets “assigned” these cases, but she is directly responsible for the freedom of many of these thugs.

    0
    1. Hey Hope, I hope you never need an attorney. Is the concept of representing a client zealously that foreign to you? For everyone on this blog shit-talking Auden–she was doing her JOB. Oh, and by the way, the baby-face was arrested. Has the trial happened yet? Was he found guilty already? Due process much, people?

      0
  9. Baker is a fine choice and also a minority businessman, I’m sorry I didn’t mention him. Gomes and Baker are good friends and can push the city forward together, along with Howard Gardner, all good friends and for the good of our city.

    1. Bob, you’re kidding, right? Joe Ganim? Not a chance. Bob, seriously no joke. You would make a formidable candidate. Even to bring the big issues to the table. Not sure your bedside manner will help you cross the finish line. But you do present some very good arguments. Honestly Bob, aren’t you tired of playing on the sidelines?

      0
  10. Newton proved in his last bid a leopard does not change his spots. Stop with the Ganim and Fabrizi recyclables. Fresh blood with forward ideas.
We know Lennie is squarely in the Foster corner, not Ganim’s, but my question of why Gomes has to get experience running for city council and not Foster should be answered and not ignored.

    0
    1. Chosen 1, I agree about the recycling of past candidates for the top post. Regarding John Gomes, whom I consider a friend and very qualified candidate, I do not think suggesting he run for council was intended as an insult. He would have benefited from experience and name recognition. Mary-Jane Foster, another fine candidate whom I supported with every breath could have and should have run for city council in Black Rock. The average voter in the City could care less about her corporate experience. They are both highly qualified, but I do not think either will be able to make noise or make money when every developer is in Mayor Finch’s corner. Things can change. Good luck to all.

      0
      1. In this economy how could Gomes give up the time it takes to run his business for a NON-PAID position? If you know him so well then you know he’s there from 6 am to closing.

        0
        1. I know very well how hard John works. That would make him a qualified candidate. He has a great business and I cannot imagine putting that on the back burner. John is driven and it is his dream. It is his decision to make.

          0
  11. MJF has more corporate experience than Mr. Gomes. She also has served at the top level of many major non profit organizations. John is a nice guy but lacks overall experience at a high level. If he runs again he will have the same problem, MONEY.

  13. Lennie, Malloy will or may be running for re-election next year. If Malloy loses the election, the Big Wage (Chris Caruso) will no longer have a job with the state. Unless Subway Inc. hires him to be their next national spokesperson, he will be back and jump into the race for mayor. How would the vote split in a four-way primary, Lennie?

    0
    1. Chris Caruso has lost his base. His ship has sailed. He deserves a job with the state. He has worked hard for the past 25 years and he certainly does not deserve any less than Fabrizi or Ayala. He worked his ass off for Malloy while the Machine supported Ned Lamont. Funny how Finch holds grudges but people forget the Lamont signs on his front lawn for six months. Caruso may not become Mayor of Bridgeport but he deserves to make his mark in government and receive no less of the benefits lackluster do-nothing administrators who have milked city and state government for entire careers with insurance and pensions. Caruso’s contribution to the City of Bridgeport should earn him no less than the parasites who are pure leeches. Clearly, I think Chris has done good things for Bridgeport. Mayor … not anymore.

    1. yahooy, do you really need to continue embarrassing yourself? Do you realize your comments hiding behind anonymity only reduce you to an apparent jealous person trying to be relevant in a vain attempt to insult others? I am sure you are a nice woman with other individuals. No need to bring out your inner bitch with me. Not that I lose sleep over it. It does bring your character and integrity into question.

      0
      1. ‘… VAIN attempt to insult others.’? VAIN ATTEMPT? Surely you jest. From the tone of your continual rebuttals, it would appear my insults are quite effective. I actually think ‘Steven Auerbach’ is really a pseudonym, you are actually ANNA.

        0
        1. yahooy, honestly, you are not going to win here. Your silly bantering is embarrassing. Save your bitchin’ for someone who cares about what you have to say. You are the reason the Huffington Post has done away with anonymous posting. I wonder if I would want to punch in in the face or just bitch-slap you. I am not a violent person. I know I shouldn’t be doing a tit-for-tat with you but I am bored. RAY FUSCI/Lennie again should be commended for allowing this anonymous cyber bullying to go on daily. Kudos. Me, I will suffer the slings and arrows.

  14. How did this post become about Grogins? Just asking.

How can anyone hold a State Rep or State Senate position in this state NOT have another source of income? The compensation is a mere pittance, and I would not be the least bit surprised if at the end of the year, many are in a negative revenue position from holding these offices. There are MANY lawyers who hold these elected positions in CT so I fail to see any substantial reason Grogins should be singled out.

The voices on this blog are becoming increasingly petty of late, and it’s a shame folks are utilizing it as a forum to trash elected officials they have a negative subjective opinion about.

Come on guys, we have bigger fish to fry. This post was supposed to be about potential mayoral candidates. Did not remember that, did ya?

    0
    1. Bond Girl–you summed it all up … and you are on the money. It is amazing how the topic gets so convoluted once the bashing starts. Little or no opportunity to share an opinion if it differs from that of a handful of predictably combative individuals.

      0
  15. You little worthless pissant. I opened this post with my opinion of how this election season could unfold. You immediately come back at me with ‘Oh yahooy, you really are an idiot.’ I didn’t solicit your insult. My post wasn’t directed at you. Yet you feel compelled to embarrass yourself by slinging innocuous invectives just for the sake of slinging innocuous invectives. They are senseless. No basis of real thought. A gaggle of contradictory remarks. Foolishness. Then you piss and moan you are being bullied. I think you are impaired from spending all that time inside the high school hall lockers.

    0
    1. yahooy, please stop crying. I suggest you and your friend Ron Mackey get busy working on Marilyn Moore’s campaign. Honestly, you are a bore and I will no longer respond to your posts. John Fabrizi is lucky to have a guy like you still licking his ass after all these years. The question one might ask is why???

      0
      1. Who is crying, horseface? All I’m doing is pointing out you are always the initiator of insulting remarks and simply cannot compete when rebutted. For the record, Mackey is not my friend. I will support Ms. Moore if and only if her opponent is unworthy. As to Fabrizi, I think the man is one of the worst things that ever happened to this city. I would support Newton before I would ever lift a finger for Fabrizi. (See if Mackey finds that remark racist.) Get your facts straight, schmekel. Maybe you could gain some credibility and people would actually be happy to see you walk into a room instead of turning in derision.

        0
        1. yahooy, thank you. Seriously. This post actually put a smile on my face. The visual of people turning in derision was priceless. 🙂 Surely you know I do not take your insults to heart as I hope you are not that sensitive.

          0
          1. At least they weren’t turning green and vomiting at my presence. 🙂 Just out of curiosity, when you enter the room, do the skies open and the angels rejoice?
