Ted Kennedy Jr. Campaigns For Moore In Trumbull, McCarthy Primary Battle Looms

Just days from Tuesday’s Democratic primary, State Senator Ted Kennedy Jr. on Thursday campaigned for his colleague Marilyn Moore in Trumbull where the freshman state senator is working to build her suburban numbers from two years ago when she received just 20 percent of the primary vote on her way to defeating incumbent Anthony Musto by running up large pluralities in Bridgeport. With nearly a term under her belt Moore has raised her profile in the suburbs and bringing in a Kennedy with strong Democratic credentials to greet the peeps adds some prestige as she tries to fend off City Council President Tom McCarthy, the party-endorsed candidate, who’s counting on a strong suburban showing.

“Marilyn has been a strong and effective leader for her district,” says Kennedy. “She’s been a key partner on the Environment Committee and a great voice to have in caucus. Senator Moore deserves re-election.”

“I’m proud to have had Senator Kennedy’s support today in Trumbull to support my re-election and speak to my constituents,” said Moore in a statement. “Ted, as Co-Chair of the Environment Committee a committee I serve on, has brought tremendous energy and commitment in Connecticut’s fight to preserve our natural resources and protect us from polluters. I’m proud of what we accomplished together, and look forward to next session as we continue to get results for the people of the 22nd.”

Kennedy and Moore met with voters for breakfast at the Old Town Restaurant a short walk from Trumbull Town Hall.

Moore is the only African American woman in Connecticut’s State Senate and a coalition that includes Connecticut’s Working Families Party, unions, local political operatives and senate leadership is trying to help her deliver a second term.

This race is different from two years ago when Moore knocked off Musto on her way to a general election win. Moore will perform stronger in the suburbs than two years ago and McCarthy, an aggressive campaigner, figures to do better in Bridgeport than Musto.

McCarthy, center, was nominated by Anthony Musto, Trumbull town treasurer, left, at the party convention. At right, Democratic Town Chair Mario Testa, a McCarthy ally.

Connecticut’s 22nd District covers all of Trumbull, one-third of Bridgeport and a portion of Monroe. Trumbull political operatives supporting McCarthy assert that Moore is Bridgeport-centric irrespective of McCarthy being an establishment Bridgeport politician. Moore, however, is touting a record for the suburbs that surpassed her Trumbull-based predecessor such as securing additional money for suburban schools and a recent success story she can share with residents of Trumbull’s senior housing complex Stern Village, an $800,000 state grant for improvements.

What’s also different for Moore is a stronger suburban campaign operation that includes groundwork from members of the politically active Connecticut Carpenters Union and Connecticut Education Association that represents teachers. In an endorsement letter to its membership Glenn Marshall, president of Carpenter’s Local 210, writes Moore “has made sure that all three towns she represents received more state aid–despite the state’s ongoing fiscal problems. She is a strong supporter of the prevailing wage, she she has fought to increase the minimum wage.”

McCarthy is backed by Trumbull’s Democratic political establishment including Musto, the town treasurer. Some political observers say Musto is working harder for McCarthy than in his own race last year. McCarthy represents the North End on the City Council. He’s hoping his council district base turns out a higher number than two years ago when Moore defeated Musto.

McCarthy’s campaign operation is also banking on an absentee ballot edge heading into primary day.

Tuesday’s primary winner will face Republican Elaine Hammers in November.

  1. Is Ted Kennedy a big drawer in Trumbull? Was it like a Trump Rally with people lined up outside the door? I hear 50cent will be holding a McCarthy rally on Monday. Clinton on Saturday for a photo- op. 🙂 Am I the king of hyperbole or am I stating facts? Tom went to another State to support Hillary Clinton during the primary. I wonder if her supporters care? The primary winner will face Republican Elaine Hammers–if ever there was a year to be anything but a Republican, this would be that year!

  2. Voter alert! I received a postcard from the Bridgeport Registrar’s office alerting me those who normally vote at Central High School will vote at Madison School on Wayne Street for the August 9 Primary.

  3. That’s just another game the machine and Sandi Ayala play to confuse the voters.
A much bigger portion of Central is represented by Moore so they move the voting to another school.
Also the other part of Central is Gomes territory.
So they are trying to kill two birds with one stone.
Last year they had construction going on at the school. A new voting entrance. Confusion abounded but people voted without any problems.
Again, just trying to f up the voters and help the politicians. It will never end in B’port.

  4. PAGING MARSHALL MARCUS!!!
    PAGING MARSHALL MARCUS!!!

Urgent request/explanation from Marshall Marcus needed immediately.

I received a mailing from OUR State Senator Marilyn Moore in which it is stated during the past year she worked to get Trumbull an 18.6% increase in state funding.
She worked to get Monroe a 4.8% increase.
While Bridgeport received a modest 3.3% increase.
Why have you been spreading these lies about our State Senator?
Why have you continuously said she is only concerned about Bridgeport?
And how much of an increase is it that Tommy McCarthy has promised Trumbull that leads you to say he will do more for Trumbull?
Sir, you owe Senator Moore a huge apology for spreading lies in order to help the white guy from Bridgeport defeat our incumbent African American State Senator.
    Shame on you!!!
Come on Marshall, you owe the woman an apology and an endorsement.
    Talk about an arrogant SOB!!!
He spread all these lies about Marilyn Moore and how she hasn’t done anything for Trumbull but when faced with the truth he slithers away like the snake he is.

    1. Bob Walsh,
You have shown yourself to be a liar, attributing statements to me I have not made.
I NEVER said Moore is only concerned about Bridgeport. I said she was seconded by speakers at the D22 convention who only spoke about what she could do for Bridgeport and I feel McCarthy can get us a bigger piece of the state pie.
I don’t continuously make any claims in this race. I’ve made very few comments.
McCarthy has made no promises I am aware of in terms of what he can bring to the District. My feeling, is just that, MY feeling. That of one voter, nothing more. I have said from Day One I’ll support the winner of the primary.
I like Moore as a person and if she is the official Democratic candidate in November I’ll work to elect her. Anyone BUT Hammers.

I have spread no lies, unlike you. I don’t care what color or sex a candidate is. As I’ve stated before, I have a mixed-race nuclear family.
I owe no one an apology for deciding to support the endorsed Democratic candidate in the primary. That choice is what America is all about. I hold no office, I do no business with state or local government and have nothing to gain personally from either McCarthy or Moore being elected.

NOW, as for the increase in money Trumbull is getting from the state. The $800K is a bad idea. Split heat-a/c will not provide the needed temperature levels in Stern Village during the winter. The grant will be used for technology that is not suitable to the need. Our idiot town government applied for the grant and the legislature passed it. This is a waste of $800K of taxpayer money. I wish it were not allocated.

I resent you calling me an SOB, when you are the liar. I am not a snake, I did not slither away when faced by your falsehoods, not the truth.
To be perfectly honest, I’ve been preoccupied as Mrs. Marcus had more surgery this week. It’s been a terrible three months and her health and recovery take precedence over politics.

Both Moore and McCarthy have been very attentive during this time of medical crisis.

I say on the record: I like Marilyn Moore, she is a lovely, caring person. She’s an acquaintance I would be proud to have as a friend. Just because you like someone or have them as a friend doesn’t mean you must support them in a particular election.

      1. McCarthy is attentive because he wants your support. Moore is attentive because that is who she is. Big difference. Enough politics.

I hope and pray God smiles upon your household.
