The landmark red-and-white smokestack towering over the harbor will remain part of the city’s skyline for at least a few more months.
The owner of the ex-coal-fired power plant beneath that 500-foot industrial symbol is pushing off its previously-announced spring demolition until around September at the earliest. The bulk of the facility was imploded late last September with help from $22.5 million in state aid.
“There’s just no reason to force through a ‘stack event,’” said Chad Parks, a partner in Bridgeport Station Development, which in 2024 purchased the retired, South End-based facility from PSEG.
Parks clarified the decision to hold off is not in response to some public pressure to integrate the well-recognized candy cane stack into any future redevelopment, but because the immediate focus is on resolving a problem complicating said revitalization.
