“That thing needs to come down,” Governor Ned Lamont announced about a year ago. Yes, the hulking monstrosity is scheduled for implosion roughly 4 a.m. Sunday, barring weather issues, a relic of the city’s industrial past making way for a multi-use, modern development along the South End waterfront, to be determined.
At so many vantage points – Seaside Park, the amphitheater, across the harbor on the East End, Downtown, land, sea, air and rail – the beastly retired coal plant is like a turd plopped into the party punchbowl.
Bring on the implosion party!
From Brian Lockhart, CT Post:
The years-long effort to shutter and redevelop the closed coal-fired power plant along the harbor is scheduled to hit another milestone this weekend.
Barring strong winds or lightning, at 4 a.m. Sunday the bulk of the remaining South End structure, which has been slowly gutted over the last few months, will be imploded, leaving piles of metal and concrete to be hauled off.
The state contributed $22.5 million for the work. The plant’s three smoke stacks, including the 500-foot red-and-white striped edifice that is considered by many a local landmark, will be left standing and leveled next spring.
“It’s obviously exciting, but it’s a lot of work,” said Chad Parks of New York-based Bridgeport Station Development, the entity that purchased the property from PSEG Power in late 2023 with still-to-be-unveiled plans for housing and other amenities. “A lot of communications, making sure stakeholders are really informed as to what’s happening. There’s a lot of moving pieces and coordination to make sure it goes off without a hitch.”

I hope, they encapsulate this chimney so it doesn’t fall on the amphitheater or Mayor Ganim.
This will give the Flucking East End Asthmatic’s something to cheer about!
If the land was going to be used for a destination project,ie a hotel, retail, restaurant type of use then I think the stack would fit in nicely as a focal point, but it looks like that great piece of waterfront land will be used for more apts, the stack would probably look out of place.Piece by piece that area is turning into a higher end “ CO-OP city”.. not saying that’s necessarily bad,but…..
Agreed. It shouldn’t be demolished until a final project is set. I was thinking a conference center/hotel, some destination draws. Then it would be a benefit to keep it.
Since the Bridgeport Islanders are not going to play Arena Perhaps the WNBA Suns should play some of their games there. You would think the Port and its Fairfield County would have a market to draw. Not sure of the draw not. but if it’s lacking, nothing to lose.
However, you have to think to Jeff’s Gold Coast Point, there is a concertive effort to depress the Port.
But perhaps you don’t have to look south but north to New Haven. I mean I found it “interesting” that The Foo Fighter, who was a draw had to cancel last year Sound on Sound didn’t headliner the following year, that was eventually cancelled. Yet they played at Toad’s Place the few days before. Pricks.
Considering there is a B-line path for those power lines from Fairfield Ave to the Congress St. and I haven’t heard about any community protest from the Port’s elected officials makes you think what direction the Port is going to go. How much of the Port is going to cut in half/sold out.
Where’s the ” I SAY POLE, YOU SAY NO” POLE, NO? Not to mention it seems the Port already has one of those towering UI poles over 95, downtown.
It also seems that it is more than possible to upgrade the grid and not have to disrupted/take any land. That towering pole was built right over the train line, and it seem depending on the location, poles are erected right on the side of the tracks. JS. Good Luck Port.
