Ron Mackey, Activist, Firefighter, Veteran, Passes Away At 80

Ron Mackey, along with his close friend Donald Day, were community insurgents that co-founded the Bridgeport Firebird Society, that lifted voice and stature to minorities advancing in the fire department. He passed away last month. He was 80 years old.

He was a long-time contributor to the OIB comments section.

Obituary from Morton’s Mortuary:

Ronald E. Mackey, affectionately known as “Ron” or “Butch,” age 80, of Bridgeport, Connecticut entered eternal rest on Sunday, November 9, 2025.

He was born on June 25, 1945, in Bridgeport, Connecticut, to the late George and Elizabeth Mackey. Ronald grew up in Bridgeport alongside his brothers, Gregory Mackey and Dewight Mackey, who both preceded him in death.

Ron proudly served his country in the United States Air Force as a firefighter. Following his military service, he worked at Remington Arms, Norden Systems, and Bridgeport Brass before joining the Bridgeport Fire Department, where he served his community faithfully for more than 28 years until his retirement.

Ron was also involved in the Bridgeport Firebird Society, an organization he cofounded with his best friend, Donald Day, to help minorities have greater opportunities for advancement within the fire department.

Although Ronald did not have biological children, he was blessed to be called a stepfather by Yvonne (Washington) Trice, Theresa Lomax, and Kim (Leo) Watson. He also shared a special bond with his grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and his beloved nieces—Victoria Bracey (New York) and Sonia Jones (Virginia)—who were his blood relatives, as well as extended family who loved and respected him deeply.

Ron was known for his calm spirit, sense of humor, and caring nature. He enjoyed spending time with family, listening to music, and watching his favorite sports teams. Those who knew him will remember his warm smile, quiet strength, and the steady presence he brought into every room.

He leaves to cherish his memory with his loving companion, Shawna Hall, his stepdaughters, Yvonne, Theresa, and Kim (Babygirl); a dear friend, Magdalene Gathers; and a host of grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces, great-nieces and nephews, and friends who will miss him dearly.

  1. Can’t depart ESL without the Prophet,

P.S Fred Astaire 🙂 if they will put an ill-experience politician in the White House, and more recently, NY City Hall. You never know? 🙃

Desperate time calls can call for desperate measures. Don’t forget MOM. Billboards WEEPA, Billboards. 🤣

Though Mandoni was much more refined with the words. As to learning on the Job. Trump got more focus. I guess getting your head almost blown off on live TV can do that.

    The Prophet, Peace out.

  3. I have been a contemporary of Ron on OIB in past years and his sense of proportion and balance were respectful of norms of the day. This has changed locally, on OIB, and in the world at large where conscious competence is not the order of the day but rather at the highest levels of elected and appointed governance, unconscious incompetence, where focusing on personal goals including greed and celebrity leave no room for good governance in administration and qualtiy appointments to positions of importance.
I cannot hear the words that Ron might have provided to frame and explain what “the media carries as news” daily. But he joined with fellow public safety officers to pursue public service and I will remember that when I pass an intersection this year with firefighters (who rescued me from an elevator this week) have boots out for contributions. Eternal peace, brother Ron. Time will tell.
