Residents Share Views To Blizzard Response

Residents shared their perspective, both pro and con Tuesday night, on the city’s efforts to clean up the blizzard of 2013. Thanks to OIB friend Steve Krauchick at www.doingitlocal.com for providing this video.

From Brian Lockhart, CT Post:

Five of the men charged with shepherding the city through the heart of this month’s blizzard and digging neighborhoods out from beneath 30 inches of snowfall pledged Tuesday night to do better.

“It was a humbling storm,” said Jorge Garcia, a deputy public works chief. “We learned a lesson.

    1. Zena, I don’t understand why the CT Post made a big deal over the mayor’s “yahoos” comment. Now had the mayor called the few people who got stuck in the blizzard yahooys, then I think that would have been enough reason for a Bridgeport riot or a political coup.

    1. But even in the height of this atrocity, the powers that be are shepherding through the Council the biggest pork barrel project yet: Harding on the GE site.
How many of the people on that panel last night: Carroll, Grabarz, Applebee, Garcia, with their six-figure salaries, actually live in Bridgeport? How many of the people pushing through this Harding project with the backroom deals actually live in Bridgepott? It matters, they really disrespect our citizenry and they really don’t care. They really don’t care and they disrespect us!

      1. Bridgeporteur, have you been INSIDE Harding High School recently? The fact children have to learn in a building in such a horrific state is criminal. Go visit Harding today and let me know if you would send your child to that school if given the chance. A new high school on the East Side is WAY overdue.

  1. I was there last night. I asked a lot of the most angry in the group if they voted in the last election or any recent election. Most did not. I was well received, actually, when I suggested the best way to get rid of Finch and our present ‘situation’ is to vote the bastards out. If the election were this week, he would be toast.

    1. Doubtful. Finch faced similar heat during the state takeover of the schools two years ago. That was close to a very contested primary election and his opponent ran against him on it, pretty aggressively. And he still won. There needs to be sustained mass voter education and registration across the city if there is any hope of beating “the machine” not just these temporary angry flare-ups. People yell, feel better about themselves and nothing changes.

      1. I agree. If the brain-dead registered voters who were held captive in their homes as a result of Finch’s profound ineptitude decide to stay away from the polls, Finch & Crew will be reelected. Somehow I think a yet to be named challenger just might bring this disaster up during the campaign. Reminded of the extreme hardship the days of confinement caused by lack of snow plowing just might get these people out to vote. Plus there are a few other miscues caused by Finch & Crew that may be discussed by a challenger that will cause people to vote.

    1. The only thing you pass is gas … where was Finch during this snowstorm? And why did Chuckles Carroll send workers home? Just to save overtime? And … they couldn’t get back to work because the streets were impassable … heh heh heh.

    2. THIS IS NOT ANNA MONTALVO WHO WAS QUOTED IN THE PAPER AS FINCH DOING A PHENOMENAL JOB. Is that just a tad over the top? That hyperbolic commentary can just anger constituents more as well as making you a contender for Mayor Finch #1 sycophant. anna … Is that you?

  2. Someone called into the show last night saying they almost missed an important hospital medical procedure, if not for neighbors removing street snow. On the other hand, today’s CT post Op Ed letters are in favor of the mayor. What will come out of this? What are criteria for declaring a snow emergency? How much can we depend on the weather center?

  3. *** Those who did not vote at all or voted for the present admin. made their beds and good or bad must lay in them, no? This is just the beginning with the city budget proceedings up to bat in the spring in what will surely amount to higher taxes come July 1st 2013. This is what a Mayoral 18% city voter election turnout brings to the Park City and its citizens. From poor quality education to multiple civil suits against the city, disguised attempts to take voting rights away and failed storm recovery city responses not to mention high peaks in crime just to name a few! All leaves us with fearful expectations as to what could possibly come next. *** HERE WE GO! ***

  4. *** Some overall views gotten from the public speaking: pre-planning, residents info, working through the storm, prepare for the worst conditions and paying outside storm help businesses on time along with not waiting ’til the last minute to call for help were just some of the improvements needed, no? *** What say you? ***
