Promises, Promises, So Many Campaign Promises …

Democratic mayoral candidate Mary-Jane Foster steps up the rhetoric in her latest news release, needling Mayor Bill Finch for promises he made as a candidate and didn’t deliver as mayor, including his spectacular promise for a $600 tax cut. Whose idea was that? (That noise you just heard came from Finch operatives running for cover.) Charter members of OIB will recall the debate over Finch delivering on that mysterious promise. In 2007 the Finch campaign thought it needed this dubious tax declaration to sneak past Chris Caruso in the primary. Caruso did Finch a favor by running a myopic campaign. I wrote then, and say it now, there are better ways to make a tax pledge. It wasn’t credible. Better to say I’ll fight, scratch and kick to hold the line on taxes. The good news for Finch: he enters the election cycle holding the line on taxes. From Foster.

Foster Hits Finch on Broken Promises

Radio ads remind voters of Finch’s phony $600 tax cut promise

Mary-Jane Foster, who is a candidate for mayor, continues building momentum for her campaign by hitting Mayor Finch in a radio campaign with ads about his record of empty promises since taking office. Coming on the heels of her campaign headquarters opening and reaching the $100,000 fundraising milestone, the ads point out Mayor Finch’s promised but never delivered $600 tax cut and the need for voters to know the truth.

“Mayor Finch set the bar for how he wants to be graded and it’s safe to say he has failed miserably at making Bridgeport the “the cleanest, greenest, safest, most affordable city, with schools and neighborhoods that improve each year,” stated Foster. “Despite the pre-election flurry of paving and plantings, the city has never been dirtier or had more pot holes, the Board of Ed budget has not increased in three years while crime has. And like every other resident, I’m still waiting for that $600 tax cut. Mayor Finch is a phony who knowingly promised something he couldn’t deliver. Bridgeport deserves better and that’s why I’m running for mayor.”

The ad may be heard on WICC 600 AM and the www.FosterForBridgeport.com web site. A transcript follows:

ANNCR: Promises, promises … how many promises did Bill Finch make?

VOICE 1: Hey Mayor Finch … thanks for that $600 tax cut … NOT!

VOICE 2: So what happened to all those jobs you promised, Mayor Finch? That’s right, they went to your campaign contributors!

VOICE 3: More police patrols? What police patrols?

VOICE 4: Cleaner and greener? The only thing greener is your fat pay raise, Mayor!

VOICE 5: So whatever happened to more money for schools?

VOICE 6: Mayor Finch, where’s my $600 tax cut?!

ROBOTIC VOICE OF ANSWERING MACHINE: Mailbox, full. Voice mailbox full.

ANNCR: Promises, promises, promises. Humph.

MARY-JANE FOSTER: Isn’t it time voters know the truth? I’m Mary-Jane Foster, I’m running for mayor, and that’s why I approve this message.

ANNCR: Paid for by Foster for Bridgeport 2011. John Guman, Treasurer.

  1. I’ve noticed a lot of unfilled potholes in Black Rock. State Street on the way into town looks like the pavement was purchased second-hand from Dresden Germany after World War II.

Crime IS up. There have been a lot of shootings, armed robberies, etc. All the stuff the city hires police officers to prevent. If there weren’t so much desperation none of this would be possible. Time for a change. Make mine Foster, please. And I ain’t talkin’ about no Australian lager beer …

Hey Mary-Jane, that’s supposed to be Charlie Coviello’s line.

  3. Loving that ad that said the LG blitz of love for MJ is a little like fox news.
The non-denied spin on the MM story yesterday coupled with today’s kiss-up has me believing LG is trying to drive a wedge between JG and MJ. Keep it clean.

  4. Isn’t it time for someone to tell Mary-Jane to get the fuck out of the way? So John Gomes can run his campaign without looking over his shoulder, and that she’s the real spoiler here?
Mary-Jane you still have time to run for First Selectman in Fairfield.
Fairfield loves scalawags and carpetbaggers, you’ll fit right in.

    2. You can’t be serious … John’s a nice-enough guy and smart too but he is NOT ready to lead this city. He’s got no money–besides his own. He’s got no message. He’s got no traction and he’s trailing way behind in the polls. Come on CCH. If anyone should step aside, it’s John.

Look, we all want the same thing–Finch out of office and someone who’s competent and credible to take over & get us back on track. For the good of the city, John needs to do the right thing and step aside.

  5. I remember on election day talking to Finch about the $600 tax rebate. Finch said to me I don’t know how the hell I am going to do that. I remember telling him you better start tap dancing with that one. I said the day after the election you had better have a good answer.
Finch never had a good answer and like every other problem that has popped up he hoped if he ignored it, it would go away. Well it has not gone away.

    1. Here’s the problem tc, if Mayor Finch told you today he was going to raise your tax rebate check from $600 up to $1200 you would be voting for Finch.

You’re the type of guy who agrees with the last person you talk to.

So MJF, look out! tc might be switching sides!

      1. Here’s CUPPY swooping by on her broom once again, this time with a dictionary in hand!!! That’s my visual? Works for me to keep in mind what she generally says or refuses to say …

Definition #2 works for her … but MJF is a City property taxpayer, employed in the City, lives in the City, has worked for multiple City initiatives as a volunteer uncompensated providing personal time, energy and talent to provide a solution for City people. How does that square with “OUTSIDER” or one who is seeking private gain or meddling in business or political affairs?

This is not the first time you make accusations, are argumentative without a stated objective or decline to dialogue with others. You find it easier to use your abilities to shoot from the hip at “everyone but Finch.” But you are shooting blanks … such a waste of talent in support of such a waste of time and resources!!!

      2. Cupcake,
You have gone from an amusement to an annoyance. Now although I can’t always agree with tc, I must respect all his opinions. He has pissed me off on a number of occasions, he is valuable to this site. I have recently given some thought to your support of the good John Gomes. He is the spoiler who will guarantee Finch’s victory. Now I wonder, are you Mrs. Finch or are you Mr. Wood? This site is merely a masquerade ball. Identity is all that conceals our true hearts. But unmasked would you speak your mind in a public forum?

  6. What about “I will donate to the zoo my salary as a state senator”? He must have been talking about the zoo on Crown St.
Or “I will return all of the campaign donations that I received from Sal DiNardo”? That was until he realized how much he actually had taken and how much he really OWED Uncle Sal.
Or his promise to run an open, transparent City Hall? He and Woody have been in a lockdown bunker mentality from day 1.
    Promises, promises, promises …

  7. With all the potholes and unfinished milling of streets Finch is paving the way to a loss. I heard they are only filling the potholes a half-ounce at a time.

  8. Gotta love that letter to the editor today–from a high school student no less–slamming Finch for turning the Harding graduation ceremony into a campaign speech. Good for young Mr. Castillo for calling the mayor out and shame on Finch for not knowing better.

    1. To Mayor Bill Finch:
I am a Harding alumnus who graduated on Monday, June 21, 2011, at Harbor Yard. During my graduation you made an attempt to address the graduating class that I felt was completely inappropriate. Your efforts to try and show the city of Bridgeport in a different light were noted, but inept. It was neither the time nor the place to advertise and promote your accomplishments. In my opinion you turned an event that was suppose to be celebrating the accomplishments of the students into a re-election campaign.

Many students sitting with me on the floor have endured personal struggles and hardships to graduate high school. I believe it was discourteous and inconsiderate to make an event that is supposed to be about the success of the students into a propaganda event. You took the podium under the guise of giving a motivational speech to the students. But, instead, it was directed at the voting public.

In my opinion, the next time you want to solicit votes you should hold a press conference and not take advantage of a life-changing moment for many graduating students. I earnestly believe that you owe Warren Harding’s Class of 2011 a sincere apology.

      Thank you for your time.

  9. I wonder how many times Bill talked about being cleaner and greener when he is actually meaner and a gleaner. He must have thrown a few JFK quotes into his bag of dirty tricks.

  10. The extent of the dirty tricks and threats by Finch and his people know no limits.
He has control over the BOE also and the dirty politics is being played there also.
    Remember what the billboard says:
    Gomes/Foster!!!

  11. Jahelis Castillo, you can make a difference. You and your classmates must register to vote. If you want to vote Finch out and someone who truly cares about education in–register Democrat and vote for Mary-Jane Foster in September. If you are going to college–get an absentee ballot. Young people’s votes could be a big influence over who will be the next Mayor.

  12. Jimfox, thanks for posting Jahelis Castillo’s letter that was in the Post.

Jahelis Castillo, I want to thank you for taking the time to put your feelings in writing for us to read. Too many times our students here in Bridgeport and particularly those from Harding High School are often spoken of in unfavorable terms.

I ask you to take what “flyonthewall” posted and that you and the students who graduated know “Young people’s votes could be a big influence over who will be the next Mayor.” Best of luck.
