Police Union Chief: Councilwoman Pereira Must Resign For Calling Officers “Piglets”

Michael Salemme, courtesy Doing It Local.

The chorus of stakeholders calling for Maria Pereira’s resignation is growing louder, the latest from Michael Salemme III, president of AFSCME Local 1159 Bridgeport Police Union, following the City Council member’s inflammatory email characterizing Bridgeport police officers “piglets.”

Pereira says she will not resign, but at the next council meeting she faces censure including removal from all committee assignments rendering her marginalized as a contributing member of the legislative body. No committee assignments, no votes cast.

Pereira’s incendiary email to City Council President Aidee Nieves is causing political trichinosis in the campaign camp of mayoral candidate John Gomes for whom Pereira serves as chief absentee ballot harvester. Gomes is doing a dance about Pereira’s role in his campaign. “Mr. Transparency” oinks for those absentees for the January 23 Democratic primary redo.

Pereira attacked the Palestinian community, bragged about flipping off the public, called Chief Roderick Porter “The Pig” and broad-stroked all officers as “piglets” in her swinish rant.

Pereira’s sowed over her election day arrest accused of assaulting a 70-year-old woman, and critic of her absentee ballot zealousness, in front of the JFK polling precinct.

Pereira cuffed election day.

Statement from Salemme:

“The men and women of the Bridgeport Police Department risk their lives every day to protect Bridgeport residents and keep the peace. It is outrageous that an elected official would call us “piglets”. Our members work under difficult circumstances and are committed to their duties every day. Elected officials should do their duty and support our officers, not refer to them in degrading terms. It is imperative that Bridgeport City Council members support public safety in our city. City Councilwoman Maria Pereira needs to resign.”

    1. This retired Bridgeport Police Headquarter Janitor STRONGLY endorses this statement.

My recent OIB commentary shall serve as an example of the systematic failure that leads to people like Maria Pereira’s continued horrifying antics.
Lennie, let the Janitor loose on her and the system.

    Jim,
Readers seem to approve your brief, smart, and startling realization while viewing Channel 12. Even RT was able to corral some credit for ‘piggy’ backing your observation. When we went about exercising our faith based second chance attitudes and applied them to political candidates, did we understand that public corruption felonies may require greater evidence of caring about the public, public evidence of remorse when admitting the past actions injurious to the public, and a firm purpose of mending those practices that preceded the illegal acts that were called out, charged, and for which a woman or man was guilty. That is how ‘humble pie’ is consumed, one day at a time. But Ganim2 seeing into the future found a way to have the public pay a higher price by asking to have his first years as Mayor, connected to his most recent eight years, before he had any evidence that he was able and caring in the administration of municipal democratic government. How and why does that happen without public awareness of the process and the cost of bridging his time behind bars and out of office in terms of funding a continuous retirement benefit? Is that fair to all concerned? Time will tell.

What do you mean, even RT? 🙂

John, what do you mean by this?

“But Ganim2 seeing into the future found a way to have the public pay a higher price by asking to have his first years as Mayor, connected to his most recent eight years, before he had any evidence that he was able and caring in the administration of municipal democratic government.

What is your evidence to the contrary that G2 does/didn’t care about the administration of municipal democratic government? Are voters supposed to go on faith alone, in your observation?

Speaking of pie 🥧 be humble, and jsut say you eat it all. 🤣

    1. JML, what the fuck does anything you wrote has to do with all this.

Many years ago (like 45) it was common to hear people calling cops “pig”. Then all of a sudden,, cops started thanking those who would call the pig/s. They would even smile and follow up with repeating the word pig and saying Pride, Integrity, and Guts. Heck, they would even wear a lapel of a little piggy. P.I.G. = Pride, Integrity, Guts.

      1. Joel,
Good question. Look at RT for an answer, though often his explanations confuse readers to a greater extent, then when they raised a question. RT imported my message into this posting at a time when I had determined that I had nothing to add to the Maria saga. The Police Union leadership needs to stand up for its membership in fairness and justice or just to inform the public, including readers of OIB, that they have an opinion adverse to some expressed on OIB.

Regarding RT quoting me, who can fashion an answer to one who has reason to apologize often, but learns little from those experiences? His comment indicates that he is aware of ‘humble pie’ but his continuing messages indicate that most people see his messages as merely crusty, without import, and with too frequent unnecessary internet references. What flavor did he consume in his most recent pie eating incident? What is the aftertaste? Time will tell.

Six (6) readers with their heads stuck up their asses. I’m positive you’re one of them. Lennie, could you share with us the number of OIB readers who read or are tuning in on this subject?

  3. While it seems unfair to the actual animal itself I say the BPD files this as, ” difficult circumstances ” they have to work under. difficult circumstances 🙃

I have a solution here people/Port. Let’s make a resolution to coin a positive term to symbolize Port’s fines. I would say ‘”Cop Daddy Arm” I mean look at those Guns. However, it might be Gender insensitive. 🙂

    The thought is catchy. 🙂
