Police Investigate Six Shootings, Two Dead–Chief Gaudett: A Really Trying Night

“Three separate incidents, six people shot, two people dead,” Police Chief Joe Gaudett said Sunday. “I am very proud of the work that all of our officers do every day, but especially last night. It was a really trying night last night.”

From Bill Kaempffer, city police spokesman:

Detectives are investigating three overnight incidents that left six people shot, including two fatally (Sunday).

The first incident happened just after midnight. There has been a large house party at 170 Pitt Street and the hosts called police for help in breaking it up. Gunfire erupted before police arrived and three people were wounded. So far, the victims have not been cooperative with police.

At 2:30 a.m., police responded to a second location at Barnum Avenue and William Street and found a 23-year-old man shot. He had been handing out with friends drinking. He walked away and his friends heard gunfire. The victim was pronounced dead at Bridgeport Hospital.

At shortly before 4 a.m., detectives responded to another fatal shooting, this one domestic in nature. A woman was shot to death inside 344 Pearl St. Her mother, her mother’s boyfriend and a five year old child were in the house as well. The mother’s boyfriend was shot in the leg.

Police identified the suspect and arrested him within an hour. He had walked to the cab company on Stillman Street and requested a cab ride to New Britain. He was barefoot and had blood on his head when he was arrested.

  1. There was seven shootings since last Friday.
The first one took place on the corner near my home in plain daylight, across the street from Bryant School, right below the cameras installed by the BPD. Clearly, a brazen act by the perpetrator/s who may not have noticed the cameras. Street revenge seems to be the agenda this past weeks and we should expect the trend to continue. There is a reason why many people involved in some form of conflict don’t talk to the police–they plan to handle the matter themselves.
