Petitioning Challengers For Special Elections Take Shape

Following a wild and crazy Democratic Party nominating convention for the February 24 special election for State Senate, Board of Education member Ken Moales, local Sierra Club organizer Onte Johnson and perennial legislative candidate Charles Hare submitted their petition signatures to the Town Clerk’s Office before the Friday 4 p.m. deadline hopeful they will qualify for the ballot as petitioning challengers to Democrat Richard DeJesus and former State Senator Ed Gomes who will appear on the Connecticut Working Families Party line.

DeJesus won the endorsement Thursday night over Gomes in a tie-breaker vote cast by his lawyer Ed Farrow who happened to be the moderator for the event. Petitioning candidates for 23rd State Senate District need 103 certified signatures to qualify.

Former State House members Bob Keeley and Hector Diaz, City Councilman Bob Halstead and newcomer to politics Tishirea Jackson all submitted their petition signatures to the Town Clerk’s Office before the Friday deadline for the February 24 special election for State House. If their signatures are certified they will challenge Democrat Steve Stafstrom and Republican Enrique Torres in the 129th State Assembly District. They need just 32 certified signatures from a review of the Town Clerk’s Office to qualify for the ballot.

Next week the Town Clerk’s Office will submit those signatures to the office of the Connecticut Secretary of the State for final review certification.

  1. NOBODY SHOULD BE TAKING APPLICATIONS FOR ABSENTEE BALLOTS AT THIS TIME. IF YOU ARE ASKED TO FILL OUT A FORM REQUESTING AN ABSENTEE BALLOT, YOU SHOULD CONTACT THE ELECTIONS ENFORCEMENT OR YOUR TOWN CLERK’S OFFICE.

    1. Hector,
While he was home from college, I discussed the Special Election taking place on February 24. The young person turned 18 within the past 12 months and registered to vote. I asked him whether he would like to vote by absentee and secured for him a form to request an absentee ballot. It has been sent to him and it is up to him to complete it and return it in a timely fashion so the Town Clerk can forward the ballot.
In your eyes, did I do something wrong, perhaps unknowingly break an election law? Or am I helping a young person form a new habit and take action based on his knowledge and opinion of the candidates and office involved? Time will tell.

  2. This is nothing more than an attempt to take away votes from Ed Gomes. These three, Moales, Johnson and Hare are Finch asswipes who will do anything Finch and Company tells them to do.
This whole nominating process has been crooked from day one. I have never seen the state place a person in charge of the DTC here in Bridgeport when we had primaries that involved other towns. Are the people at the state level trying to make us believe they did not know the person they elected to chair the meeting was DeJesus’ lawyer? This was basically an illegal move and a slap in the face to freedom and liberty.
NOTE to Rick DeJesus: Rick, I am really disappointed in you. I thought you were honest and had integrity. I guess I was wrong. SHAME ON YOU.
