Outrage Over Shooting Of Three-Year-Old Girl

The shootings, sadly, are piling up. The girl’s injury appears to be non-life threatening, according to an initial report by www.doingitlocal.com. From Dan Tepfer, CT Post:

A wave of outrage is building Tuesday throughout Bridgeport, a day after a 3-year-old girl was caught in the crossfire of rival gangs as she crossed a West Side street with her mother. The girl, who was not identified, was shot in the buttocks and was being treated at Yale-New Haven Hospital, where her condition was not immediately available.

Current and former city residents took to Twitter and Facebook Tuesday morning to express their anger, with more than a dozen lamenting the violence on the Connecticut Post’s Facebook page.

  1. A 3-year-old girl was shot late Monday afternoon as she waited to cross the street with her mother, apparently caught in the crossfire of two rivals.

But Rep. Auden Grogins got $160K for the Burroughs Community Center.
Hey Auden, what about Gun Control???

People of the 129th, wake up!

      1. Lennie, Grogins is sitting as our State Representative. Not Sully! This is in her backyard, instead of running around looking for Strip Clubs and Massage Parlors, show us one bill by Grogins on gun control.
Just more smoke and fluff, while our kids get shot in the 129th. I’m sure the Bridgeport Police Department can find ways to use $160k to get guns off the street.

        1. Sully’s not serving in the legislature, Jim. Nor will he ever serve. Unless and until he liberates himself from servitude to John Barleycorn he’ll never make a difference.

          1. And oddly enough, I am in complete agreement with the Bridgeport Kid! My sentiments exactly.

    1. Yes, she did garner $160K for the Burroughs, and I for one applaud her for that. I don’t understand how you are attempting to make her appear as an underachiever. Just a political cheap shot.

        1. You and your candidate have imbibed in cheap shots, I’m sure. To point a finger at Auden regarding this unfortunate shooting is just absurd. Don’t compare apples to oranges. And just an afterthought, your candidate has a snowball’s chance in hell of defeating her.

  2. You can’t blame Auden for gang violence. Blame the chief of police. He needs to step it up. God knows we pay him enough money. (Full salary plus his pension!)

  3. I woke up to this story this morning. The first thing that came to my mind was: Is she okay? The second thing that came to my mind was: Is she okay? The third thing that came to my mind was: How is her family? Maplewood Ave is not that far from my home, and that fact is very scary, as is the fact it happened at 5:30 PM, at which time I could be walking my dog or something, but jeez, how is this Grogins’ fault? What about Bridgeport’s Finest? That kind of thing is in their job description, no?

    1. The fault lies with the leadership of this city. The Mayor and the Chief of Police have stuck their heads in the sand and pretended like all of these kids dying in the streets are just random acts of violence. There is nothing random about it. It is a surge, huge surge of gang violence and there is nothing being done about it. No acknowledgement, no planning, no initiative, nothing. The Mayor and Chief of Police know gang resurgence is bad politics so they’re wringing their hands and letting gangs take back the streets. Ask the mothers of YANA who killed their children. Gangs.

    2. Of course it’s not her fault. But when you are supporting a wildcard candidate with no platform and no experience or credibility, the only recourse he has is to attack the incumbent. Politics at its worst. As far as gang-related crimes, it has spiraled out of control, maybe it’s time to bring in assistance from the State Police and the Feds.

  4. Bridgeport is a small enough town to know who these gangs are–pretty damn quick.

You want your cops to get these guys and I am sure they are after them, have been after them, and have gotten them before.

After a terrible incident like this is resolved, I am often amazed by what the individuals involved got away with before the latest outrage.

No use blaming state representatives and the like unless you are expecting them to push through gun bans (and that idea got Bridgeport and other communities exactly nowhere before).

  5. In the 1950s there was gang warfare in NYC (remember “West Side Story”). NYC OUTLAWED belonging to a gang and made it a jailable offense just to belong. The police know who these burdens to society are but are hamstrung by the politically correct.
WE ARE AT WAR WITH DRUGS AND GANGS!!!
There needs to be serious intervention without the ACLU getting involved on a politically correct basis.

  6. The shooting of this young girl is a shame. There is enough blame to go around. The lack of police patrols is part of the problem. Another fault lies with the state’s gun laws. A person found with a gun who does not have a permit should get an automatic five-year sentence for carrying that gun. Homeowners who have licensed guns that are stolen from their homes should be fined if these guns were not properly secured. The other problem is fear; people are afraid to get involved because they don’t trust the criminal justice system.

  7. Guns, violence, gangs? We need to really do something to get kids off the streets and into job opportunities. Students need internships for job prospects. Hope could be on the way …

Tonight at 8pm on “Bridgeport Now” TV, tune in to find out about student internships in Bridgeport and more.

Special guest: John Fabrizi, Director of Adult Education and Co-chair of the High School Transformation Committee in Bridgeport. On Ch 88 Cablevision.

  8. WDJZ 1530AM The Jim & Tom Show from 9:00 to 10:00 AM Wednesday. How Safe are our streets when a three year old can’t walk on them?

Who do we blame? The Cops? The Mayor? Auden Grogins? The Gangs?

  9. How about blaming the shooter! Let’s string him up. Neighbors have to be willing to serve as witnesses, serve in block watches, fathers must be there to discipline their children and we must enforce the handgun laws on the books. Blaming politicians and cops for a society that’s soft on bad parenting, which creates gangsters and residents who are apathetic, is misdirected.

  10. *** Who to blame; let’s start with the coward shooters first, no? The Po-Po can’t be everywhere just at the right time to stop crime from ever happening in this overpopulated urban concrete jungle. This city needs more young cops and those with 35 years-plus need to retire. Spring and summer months need more community patrolling with an active gang (crash unit) turning up the heat on known gang members and their associates. That takes money and a Mayor and Chief who’s willing to make certain cuts in the dept to free up some manpower and money and enforce certain laws on the books that get overlooked. What’s happening with the youth curfews talked about for this year? Time to let the dogs out and get tough on crime in 2013! *** It’s everybody’s business. ***

  11. “I’m sure the Bridgeport Police Department can find ways to use $160k to get guns off the street.”
Jimfox, if this is your idea, if this is something you think you can implement or make better, then what are you going to do about it (other than simply making your opinion known)? Have you gotten a group together, have you contacted your local rep or council people, or even the police? You seem to have many opinions about many things, especially of those who are working to make things better … but what do you actually do to effectuate change? Do you think just coming on this blog or having a radio show is making a difference? Do you think you are making things better? If you have a cause you believe in, do something about it. Don’t sit around and wait for others to do it for you … form a group, get organized, make relationships, talk nicely, and you can make change. But coming on here, trash-talking those who are working hard, and actually thinking people are going to take you seriously is not going to change a thing. Change takes a long time, organization and a ton of work … None of which I see you doing.

    1. Amen, AllforOne. We need to ask what can we do and ask the police what can and are they doing. Neighborhood watches, get organized and get boots on the ground and nighttime car patrols of citizens watching and reporting suspicious activity has been successful–do the police need to start concentrated patrols in areas known to be gang territory? People do make a difference when they unite, organize and work together with all the city resources. Crime will continue to happen if neighbors are not united, organized and working together.
