New Eats In Black Rock

Inspired by a sailing bar in Newport Rhode Island, Pat Dower and Mike Andre have transformed the former location of Tavolini, 3074 Fairfield Avenue, into The Black Rock Yacht & Athletic Club. It has a look and feel of a traditional yacht club social atmosphere, but Dower says all are welcome.

“It’s a play on a club but it’s really a public bar and restaurant,” says Dower. “We classed the idea up a bit for Black Rock and opened BRYAC.”

We at OIB like to crack open the juicy stuff and Friday at 7 p.m. Dower and his business partner Andre will open their doors offering a fresh raw bar of oysters, clams and shrimp. Starters include fried calamari, pan roasted Maine mussels, crab cakes, oyster rockefeller, clams casino and potato skins. Entrees include baked cod with lobster sauce, crab mac n’ cheese, cornish hen, New York strip and linguini in clam sauce. Plus an assortment of burgers and sandwiches.

The owners of Tavolini closed their doors more than a year ago so it’s nice to see that location filled with a new look and concept. Check it out. www.bryac.org.

    1. It’s a different name, but yes, it does include some of the same words. Many of the Black Rock YC members have already joined us in support of this endeavor.

      1. We do care when someone steals our good name.
BRYC has been around for over 100 years. As a member I am totally appalled by you pirating our good name. Pirate is a term that basically describes someone who plunders another’s possessions. You could have used The Mystic Knights of the Seven Seas or something like that. The shark is now in your net, mate!

        1. C’mon Jim, you don’t own the name, so give it a rest. Do you know for a fact they pirated (didn’t get permission from the owners of) the name? And even if they did and the owners of the name want to contest their use of it, that’s their business, not yours. If you don’t like it, complain to the club officers, and stop whining about it here.

          1. What’s next? They steal our burgee?
My dues gets mailed to this chowder house?
I heard the food was great, but lets face it, you just can’t steal the clubs good name and get away with it!
            No one gave permission, Booty.
As a Member/Owner I never voted to give this Chowder Hut permission.
I will take this up with the Commodore at the next members’ meeting.

  1. Jimfox,
I hear you and support that idea–so please, don’t be upset when I take umbrage with your taking the name of my quiet hamlet where I live for your club. Or I’ll just let you use it. And I’ll keep my nice, clean, friendly new watering hole for us locals without the blue jacket with a little symbol on it.

  2. Congrats to Mike & Pat and I wish them many years in business.

HEY JIMBO, I didn’t realize the BRYC advertised itself as an athletic club too. It is the BRY&AC last time I checked, no copyright infringement or ‘pirating’ of names there.

My recommendation is since Jimbo is slandering the BRY&AC club by calling it a ‘chowder hut’ and the owners ‘pirates’ I guess you could file a lawsuit over slander. He also has a thing against Jews so that makes him antisemitic, which we all already know and it probably cost him an election …
