Musto-Moore Heading For Primary Rematch

Three-term Democratic State Senator Anthony Musto was endorsed for another two-year term Monday night by delegates at the party convention at Testo’s Restaurant. Political activist and healthcare professional Marilyn Moore received enough support for a primary setting up a rematch of their close race in 2008.

Moore has already raised enough funds to qualify for an $83,000 public grant under Connecticut’s Citizens Election Program of publicly funded races.

Connecticut’s 22nd State Senate District covers Trumbull, and portions of Monroe and Bridgeport, including the North End, West Side and Black Rock.

Trumbull Town Councilman Rick Costantini is the Republican endorsed candidate.

  1. Decisions, decisions. The mayor and the junta probably have to support both Musto AND Ayala. This will require a city-wide effort, just the sort of thing that could make the wheels fly off this outfit. The mayor has successfully dealt–with help–mainly neighborhood brushfires against his administration. The mayor, Mario and Stafstrom have to be on the same page here. Anyone else? Or does Bobby Walsh et al. finally get a clean shot at cracking these guys?

  2. Well I am going to be very interested in this match up. I will not dismiss Moore and am very excited to hear her platform. I am not anti-Musto but now both candidates will put their cards on the table. Personally, I am very much looking forward to attending the debates. My vote is up for grabs at this point. I may have been dismissive of Marilyn on this blog as well as outside this blog, however I will be open and fair and need to see them side by side.

  3. Good for Marilyn Moore. She ran a very credible race against Musto once before and now she can run against him based on his record. While Bridgeport isn’t all of the district, he has done nothing for Bridgeport–no money home, no initiatives, no opinions, no nothing, nada. Swearing in McCarthy was a slap in the face to Hennessy’s bill to amend the state statute loophole allowing city employees to serve on a City Council where they vote on their own pay raises. He waffled on the girls detention center, gun control and everything else. He needs to go. I hope Marilyn wins and wins big.

  4. I’ve got a vote on the upcoming Musto/Moore contest–if you want zest with your political season, grab a bar of soap. Otherwise, keep an eye on the fly in Baffled in Bridgeport’s soup!
Musto did not waffle but BiB sure is baffled.

  5. Both Senator Musto and Senator Ayala opposed legislation that would have upheld our charter and eliminated conflicts of interest on our City Council. Both recognized and understood the charter provisions were voted upon by the residents of Bridgeport and both were fully aware by opposing this legislation they were in fact ignoring the will of the people as expressed in an open and fair election process. And both certainly knew this was completely at odds with the fundamental governing principles of our representative democracy. For Senator Ayala, a former history student of mine and now a history teacher himself, this is particularly troubling. I certainly hope he doesn’t teach his students the way of governance as expressed by his actions. Neither he nor Musto deserve to continue serving as representatives of people they have clearly chosen to ignore.

    1. We did vote. We voted not to allow City Council members to hold City jobs. Votes are not nearly as effective in Bridgeport as in Trumbull it seems.

    1. Whether “loopholes are legal” is a question we visit repeatedly in Bridgeport … and that seldom is adequately answered … thanks to our pathologically deceptive mayor and his supplicating and “pleasure”-serving lawyers and state senators.

BTW, Lennie–since you were the first person a la Bridgeport I heard say the words “serves at the pleasure of the mayor”–I wanted you to know I heard they’re considering changing the name to “Serve at the Mayor’s Pleasure Beach.”
