McMahon Shares Economic Plan

Republican U.S Senate candidate Linda McMahon unveiled her economic plan Wednesday afternoon pledging to put America back to work, support a middle class tax cut, stop out-of-control spending, borrowing and debt with a renewed focus on job training.

I’ve built a business from scratch and I know what job creation is. It starts with a risk taker who has an idea–with the small businesses that create 65% of all new jobs. Small businesses fuel the economic engine, and I believe we need to make it easier, not harder, for small businesses to succeed. That’s how we’ll put Connecticut back to work.

Now, the jobs plan I’m proposing isn’t just my plan, it’s truly Connecticut’s plan. It’s the product of visiting and listening to thousands of people across our state.

McMahon’s chief rivals responded quickly. From GOP primary opponent Chris Shays:

Mrs. McMahon outlined a number of positions Christopher Shays has been advocating for the last 6 months, many of which he proposed and voted for when he was in Congress,” said communications director Amanda Bergen. “There are areas where he has disagreements. For example, she does nothing to simplify the tax code. And rather than helping to get our financial house in order, McMahon’s proposal makes our annual trillion dollar deficits even worse by proposing huge tax cuts with no spending offsets. This is irresponsible and politics as usual.

From Democratic U.S. Senate candidate Congressman Chris Murphy:

What McMahon is proposing is no different from what the Republicans have been proposing for the last 20 years–drastically cut funding for programs that help kids and seniors in order to continue massive tax breaks for the wealthy. Under McMahon’s plan, schoolkids in Hartford would face devastating cuts in education funding and seniors in Bridgeport would pay more for Medicare, while McMahon’s taxes would be cut even lower. That’s not how Connecticut’s economy is going to recover.

We need to focus on asking the wealthiest to pay their fair share so we can afford to make investments in education. We need to get tough on outsourcing to grow good manufacturing jobs here in Connecticut. That’s a real plan for economic success in our state.
