Mayor Plans Earth Day Events

Mayor Bill Finch, the city’s resident Mr. Green Jeans, shares his Earth Day activities for Tuesday in a news release:

On Earth Day (Tuesday, April 22), Mayor Bill Finch will join green job creators and community leaders for a press conference and roundtable discussion about Eco-Technology Park, the city’s hub for sustainable business development, and its future growth.

“Our goal is to become one of the greenest cities in the country,” said Bridgeport Mayor Bill Finch who also co-chairs the U.S. Conference of Mayors Climate Protection Task Force. “And as Bridgeport continues to become one of the greenest cities in America, Eco-Technology Park serves as a hub for green job creation, moving our city toward an even more sustainable future.”

The press conference and roundtable discussion will kick-off at 9:00 a.m. at AKDO (1435 State Street, Bridgeport, Connecticut 06605). At 10:00 a.m., Mayor Finch will lead a walking tour of Eco-Technology Park. Stops on the tour will include:

Dominion Fuel Cell – the largest of its kind in North America.

EnviroExpress – the first low-emission liquefied natural gas station to operate east of the Mississippi.

Tri-State Biodiesel – a facility that converts cooking grease into diesel fuel in order to power vehicles and heat homes.

Flexipave – a company that recycles old tires and turns them into permeable pavement.

Wheelabrator – a facility that converts trash-to-energy.

Green Depot – a green building supplies company.

Captain’s Cove – Located adjacent to the future site of 9,000 solar panels covering an old landfill and an anaerobic digester, which converts organic waste, including wastewater sludge-to-energy.

  1. Mr. Mayor, how about less talk and more time on following state regulations?
    www .ct.gov/deep/lib/deep/reduce_reuse_recycle/data/summary_of_msw_recycling_and_disposal_for_ct_munis_fy2011.pdf

How can this guy tout how “green” Bridgeport is when we don’t even report it? Again, all this is just in his mind–there is no data to back up his claims. If he keeps saying it long enough, people just seem to believe him.

The only “green” movement I see that never misses a beat is the green money leaving my pocket and going the city to spend on the mayor’s pet projects. None of which ever seem to benefit me or lessen my tax burden. That on top of a two-year reval delay just keeps me paying more than my fair share for two more years.

  2. Whoop de doo! Another day scheduled for touting a bunch of stuff the mayor spends his time on and produces no increase to the grand list, no measurable increase in jobs but endless increases in meaningless press releases (and green signs). The old “If you say it often enough, people will believe it” trick. Not.
We need to get Flexipave, the recycling of old tire company to recycle this mayor into pavement … now that would create jobs …

  3. Captain Hawley,
CT Statutes mean as little to the Mayor as our own Charter or other materials produced by the City. Since you mention Wheelabrator, you can refer to page 16 of the Mayor’s 2014-15 budget book. You will see it listed as the City’s largest Principal Taxpayer in 2012 with Taxable Assessed Value at $320,948,352 a full $109 Million in excess of UI (second largest) and double the size of PSEG Power (third largest). Good info.

Well if you return to the Approved 2013-14 Budget book you will see THE SAME CHART on page 46! Surprised? Don’t be. It may not be laziness on the part of the City. It may be the way they avoid presenting an embarrassing fact about the court battle between the City and Wheelabrator that has persisted for at least four years. (What has that cost us with legal and technical representation? FOI request, anyone?) And what has the court uncovered? The public record indicates the technical expert for the City comes up about $100 Million short of the values the City alleges Wheelabrator should pay taxes upon. Curious? Perhaps if the chart had been updated to 2013, the numbers would have to change. Talk about half-truths, this one is a whopper. So BUDGET SUMMARY … BRIDGEPORT IN CONTEXT … Page 16 was phoned in. Have you seen any other charts or graphs that were not updated in this year’s Mayor’s budget book? Time will tell.
