DAN MALLOY’S PLAN TO CUT 15% OF POSITIONS UNDER GOVERNOR’S CONTROL

CLAIM: Tom Foley says that Dan wants to cut the executive branch payroll by fifteen percent, which he equates to 8,000 jobs

TRUTH: Despite Tom Foley’s claims, Dan has always been 100% consistent on this point. First, he has said his goal is to cut by 15% the positions that the Governor has a role in filling, including his office staff, commissioners, their deputies and non-unionized support staff, etc. These are hundreds and hundreds of political appointees.

Unlike Tom Foley, Dan knows something about shrinking government, because he did it in Stamford. The day Dan became Mayor there were 1298 employees under his watch. The day he left there were 1171. That’s 127 fewer employees. 14 years … and government got smaller and more effective. Tom’s government experience is a little different. As head of the American effort to privatize the economy of Iraq, Tom oversaw the disappearance of more than $8 billion. (Source: (GovExec.com, February 6, 2007)

DAN MALLOY AND CONNECTICUT LABOR

CLAIM: Tom Foley claims that Dan had a “private phone call” with state teachers and made “secret deals” with labor

TRUTH: A private phone call? Dan did a teleconference call in which 40,000 teachers were invited. Does Tom Foley really think Dan considers that private?

Dan has never said anything in a meeting with labor that he hasn’t said hundreds and hundreds of times in front of crowds or the media.

The difference between Dan and Tom is that Tom’s never once negotiated a contract with labor. Over 14 years as Mayor, Dan had those tough discussions. He’s had people protest on his front lawn, and he’s had to sit down at the negotiating table and ask working families to meet him half way.

That’s one reason Dan have the support of so many working men and women across the state. They know his record of being a fair and honest partner in government. They also know that they won’t get the same from Tom Foley. They know that his plan is to try and balance this budget on the backs of Connecticut’s working families, by raising their local property taxes and taking away their health benefits.
