Informational Meeting For Steel Point

Public invited to informational meeting on roadway improvements in Steelpointe Harbor area

The City of Bridgeport has a project for roadway improvements on Route 130 (Stratford Avenue), Route 127 (East Main Street) and the I-95 Exit 28 NB off-ramp around the SteelPointe Harbor Area. The improvements include milling & overlay, roadway widening for exclusive left turn lanes, traffic signal upgrades and drainage improvements. Preliminary design has been completed and the project is slated for construction under the Transportation Investment Generating Economic Recovery (Tiger II) Program administered by the Connecticut Department of Transportation and the Federal Highway Administration (FHWA).

It is the City’s and the State’s policy to keep the public informed and involved when such projects are undertaken. It is important that the community share its concerns to assist in the project’s development. The City will conduct an informational meeting on May 5th at 7 pm at Barnum School 495 Waterview Ave, Bridgeport, CT 06608.

The project is designed to improve roadways along Route 130 and Route 127 within the City of Bridgeport. The roadway improvements follow the Complete Streets model, including roadway reconstruction, traffic signal upgrades, separation/reduction of site drainage, and inclusion of bikeways, enhanced landscaping, and pedestrian connections to the surrounding neighborhoods, Bridgeport’s Downtown Intermodal Transportation Center, and the public water front.

The roadways to be reconstructed under this project traverse the Steel Point peninsula, an approximately 50.6-acre peninsula located in the southeastern part of the City of Bridgeport and adjacent to the downtown business district across the Pequonnock River, which borders the site to the west. The Steel Point peninsula is a mostly vacant Brownfields site, and it is one of the few existing large-scale waterfront areas open to redevelopment in the coastal region between New York City and Providence, Rhode Island.

Based upon a preliminary assessment, the construction cost will be approximately $13.5 million.

The Federal Highway Administration will provide 80% of the construction cost with the City providing 20%.

  1. CAN I GET A DATE?
    I caught the date and time for the meeting to be held this week.
    But what date will the TIGER funds actually become available to the City and on what schedule?
    If they are already totally available, when will the construction begin and what does the schedule show for a completion date according to the plan?
    With the history of plans in this City, why couldn’t all the dates be put in the City release?

  2. Isn’t it Steal Point now? Ooops … I meant STEEL POINTE.

    Does anyone know how much (in $$$) tax revenue has been lost over the years since all of the commercial, residential and industrial buildings have been demolished? And how is it after–what–7/8 years the developer hasn’t built anything as yet? Typically, Land Disposition Agreements have performance timetables. What’s the timetable–20 years?
