If Ganim Runs, It’s A Game Changer–But How? Plus, The Finch Strategy

On Monday OIB sized up the mayoral race with Bill Finch poised, barring a new dynamic, for reelection. What could change the dimension beyond a gaffe from the incumbent or current mayoral challengers dramatically stepping up their game? Former Mayor Joe Ganim. If he gets in, the mayoral campaign changes radically from an incumbent mayor emphasizing accomplishments and largely ignoring opponents to one of guerrilla warfare.

The big question: if Ganim gets in will it be as a Democrat, an independent in the general election, or both?

The former mayor, who served from November 1991 to April 2003 before driven out by his public corruption conviction, has been banging phones soliciting campaign support trying to figure out the best strategy, according to city pols.

On Monday OIB shared a September Democratic primary scenario, based on the current field of challengers, that benefits Finch. Mary-Jane Foster, John Gomes and Charlie Coviello carve up the anti-vote and  Finch cruises to a primary win riding the base party support. OIB polling shows in a head-to-head match up that Finch has a single-digit lead over Joe Ganim among Democratic primary voters. When Ganim, Finch, Foster, Gomes and Coviello are tested in a large field, Ganim pulls into a single-digit lead. What’s going on?

Polling shows that nostalgia for Ganim exists in the African American and Latino communities. He has a large lead over Finch among those constituencies. Finch, however, enjoys a commanding lead over Ganim in the higher turnout predominantly white precincts in Black Rock, North End and West Side. What gives? Black and brown voters tend to be more forgiving, and it simply may be a question of economics. Many have friends or family members who’ve experienced problems with the law with a healthy skepticism toward cops. In addition, minority voters saw progress under Ganim.

So why does a large Democratic primary field benefit Ganim? He brings a base of support to the table. Meanwhile polling shows that Mary-Jane Foster performs well in the higher turnout areas that support Finch over Ganim. In a large field that includes Ganim, Foster takes votes from Finch. So if Ganim jumps into the primary look for a Finch supporter who’s friends with Foster to persuade her out of the race. The initial conversation could go something like this:

“Mary-Jane, do you really want to see Joe Ganim back as mayor?”

“Well, if you’re so concerned about that,” Foster might reply, “tell Finch to support me.”

So far the Finch forces have correctly responded to Foster in measured tones. They’d be smart to continue doing that. If Ganim gets in as a Democrat it becomes a Finch-Ganim race with both camps throwing bombs. Finch and Ganim have never been buds. There’s a possibility for Foster to frame herself as the alternative, but that depends if Foster and her operatives know how to sell that message. It’s a big if. To OIB friends supporting John Gomes and Charlie Coviello, forget it. They don’t have the firepower to be factors in this scenario.

Could Ganim decide screw it, forget the 2,000 petition signatures required to get on the ballot as a Dem, I’ll take my chances as an independent in the general election trying to appeal to a broader range of voters including 20,000 unaffiliated voters? Maybe, but does he risk turning off Democratic voters in the general election? And what do unaffiliated voters think of Joe?

But could Ganim follow two scenarios? Running in a Democratic primary and also have a Plan B scenario? That would mean anticipating a general election candidacy as a petitioning candidate in case the primary didn’t work out. But couldn’t Finch do the same? What if Ganim runs and wins a Democratic primary? Maybe Finch could enthuse all those unaffiliated voters, along with like-mined Dems, to support him in the general.

Is this nuts? Never hurts to consider all the possibilities. Let’s see if Ganim plays or goes back to the family farm in Easton.

  1. Joe can’t put his family through the beatings he will get. Not even he has such an ego. He is looking for something from Finch to Not Run. What that is remains to be seen.

    1. Joe Ganim hates Finch and needs nothing from him. Remember that Finch was the first to call for Ganim’s resignation. Even after Ganim bailed out Finch countless times because birdbrain couldn’t hold onto a job. That’s the kind of loyalty Finch has towards the people who support him. If Joe wants to run, he’ll run. I hope he does. If neither MJF nor Gomes can win the primary (unless by some miracle they join forces), then Ganim is the lesser of two evils. This city is crumbling now. We will not survive four more years of the Finch administration. The problem is it is well hidden and the people won’t know until it’s too late.

  2. What a Rip by a flyonthewall. Finch is probably looking for some fly paper or a fly swatter on this post. I guess this is what happens when you are a fly on the wall?

Finch may have MOM, but he doesn’t have ETHICS. This is a man who said he could lower property taxes $600.00. He said it KNOWING there was no way he could do it. All the numbers said he couldn’t do it, the law said he couldn’t do it (he failed to mention that one) (he almost crapped himself when he thought a bill was out there that would make his plan legal) and he did it with the specific intent of defrauding the public because he thought that was the only way he could win. He lied to dozens of people to get their support and you all know who you are. Mario WAKE UP! Finch doesn’t respect you then, he doesn’t now, he brags about how he’s got you under control, sends Wood the boy to do a man’s work. He supported Stafstrom over you for DTC chair. Keeping your enemies closer crap is stupid, just get rid of your enemies. Are you a MAN Finch or are you lying rat? Now Finch has the same MONEY thanks to the people he paid off in jobs and Stafstrom, OPERATION/MACHINE–Wood, Mclain, Stafstrom, Beccaro, Maley et al., (Finch is using taxpayers’ money to run his campaign) and the same tired old MESSAGE, the cleanest, greenest, successful, shining castle on the hill crap. Finch, show US the MONEY–he can’t! He couldn’t win without cheating then (the $600.00-plus in several debates certain people provided Finch with the questions beforehand), he outspent Caruso 3 to 1 for about 149 votes (bought and paid for, putting a certain person on the street with I believe $30,000 grand to “get the vote out,” if you get my drift.) Carolanne, Coviello, numerous OIB posters, people in servitude in Finch’s fiefdom, people on his campaign team then and now ALL know. 3 people can’t keep a secret unless two are dead. Finch will not be able to hide this forever, don’t go down with Finch, come out with what you know. Mr. Caruso, you care about this City, fought for this City, be the hero you know you can be, throw your support to MJF, the person with best chance and best experience. Mr. Gomes no offense to you, you are smart guy with a lot to offer but you have to know when to fold ’em. If you really want to get the devil disguised in a Pepsodent grin out of office, join MJF. Foster with the support of Gomes and Caruso can take Finch down. Learn how to join forces and live to fight another day or lose and be out of the game forever. Buzz freakin’ buzz …

      Rip,
Fold ’em? You should have had some ice to dilute that Kool-aid … maybe a slice of lemon?

      1. Carolanne,
I guess you failed to mention you were cc’d in this post. I just copied and reposted from a flyonthewall post. Perhaps we could be better served if you would comment on the substance of the accusations made by the fly.

Foster hits $100K mark. What’s in your wallet? I take my Kool-aid neat and not on the rocks. Hope all is well.

  3. He makes a good point. What happens if Caruso comes forward and supports an anti-Finch candidate, let’s just say MJF? Does that change things?

  4. I think Governor Malloy is an unmentioned factor here. This will be his first chance to influence local politics as Governor of Connecticut and Bridgeport played a significant role in his recent election.

He has a former candidate for Mayor in his administration; a local bond counsel and plenty of “ears on the ground” here in Bridgeport. That trio makes a decision easy and likely in my opinion. However I have no insight into the Governor’s leanings, desires or inclinations.

It’s also another reason for Ganim to remain on the sidelines and kill time while pondering a run as an Independent.

Politics is war without bloodshed, right?

    1. Malloy needs no one in Bridgeport, he’ll stay out of this race for sure. After all Finch, Mario and the DTC bagged him when he was looking for help. He might help Caruso if Caruso jumps in the race late. Now that would be great! Maybe Lombard’s entertaining the possibilities.

      Local,
First, is the Governor going to sign off on the Implementure bill and give the Mayor his pension fund dream of deferring payment obligations? That’s going to give us a significant indicator of where the Governor will be. Wouldn’t you say?

      1. Carolanne Curry–
Pensions are a huge problem nationwide. Governments have overpromised yet they are legal liabilities to taxpayers and beneficiaries alike.

Unionized workers are leading the nation in bankruptcies because their generous benefits have made then targets for credit cards, home equity lines and assorted debt instruments. Incidentally, these creditors are the same banks who were bailed out with billions!

I have NO IDEA what the Governor will do–he hasn’t called me all day long. I would not be surprised if he weighed in on the upcoming election.

        But I digress.

You can’t be a pontificator if you spend all your time fencesitting–ask any desperado.

If you want to say ride ’em, cowboy, you have to saddle up, giddy up and make sure the crowd can hear your spurs a-jingling.

This way you can put a little sagebrush on your next post …

  5. It sure will. And he or Foster will get my vote, it all depends who is in a better position to beat Finch. I don’t feel like wasting my vote for a candidate who cannot beat Finch.

  6. Gomes faces an uphill battle getting his message out. Of the six posters on this blog 5 are MJF and her people. Gomes’ press releases are ignored by the Post and squashed or twisted by OIB. The idea that Marylin Moore backs him because of color is a fabrication. Truth is no one knows what is going on or who is backing Gomes and underestimating his chances is a major mistake. While Finch and MJF lob grenades, Gomes is quietly TCB.

  7. The Reeper said it all with the below statement.

“Gomes faces a uphill battle getting his message out.”

It’s going to be all downhill if we don’t get people together to support one candidate.

  8. Agreeing with Rip and Reep, we got to back one and remove the Bird.
Gomes has a release stating he will revise the charter if elected.
You’re not gonna read that unless MJF copies and pastes it as her own. Like Reeper said, Gomes is squashed and being twisted.

  9. Perception is reality in politics and if your messages are squashed and twisted then that’s the perception, which now becomes your reality. CC if I were drinking Kool-aid, I’d be dead like Jimmy Jones. I am alive and a well known coinsurer of BS and who is shoveling it. Of the contenders MJF is making the most money, has the most name recognition and is getting the most free media. People will line up behind the person they think can beat Finch. Gomes started the earliest and even with that handicap (as in horseracing and golf) is still behind. Dems (in this case anti-Finch Dems) need to take a cue from Republicans, run the person with the best chance, that’s why Romney is going to get the nod. MJF has a vision for this city that is based in creating jobs, better education and getting rid of the political lackeys. She is well versed in economic development as opposed to hydroponics and painting roof tops green. Business comes to a town when they trust the leadership. Finch treats business like everyone else, he tells them what they think they want to hear, even if it isn’t the truth, and is baffled when everyone gets pissed off. He doesn’t get that people have to trust you. CAN anybody look at Finch’s record and say this is a trustworthy guy? He hires unqualified political flotsam, gives them raises, puts his buddies on the payroll (3 guys for the same job that could be done by in-house attorneys), fires hundreds of others, has an enforcer who with some hair dye and a short black mustache resembles he who must not be named, has very questionable financial relations with the so-called “People for Excellence in Government Pac,” and lies to the people about tax cuts and Senate salary donations. Over his years in office taxes went up despite the fact he used the same gimmicks and smoke and mirrors he criticized Fabrizi and Sherwood for using 3 1/2 years ago. He started running for re-election from day one, having the taxpayers pay for his campaign manager (the dark lord) instead of focusing on what is good for the City. He funneled campaign money into a PAC to pay for him and Mrs. Mayor to booze it up at the convention and inaugural (probably still a YouTube of that one somewhere), buy his cronies gifts, dinner and drinks (can someone post that link to the PAC finances again?) AND this to me just says says it all … NOT that he introduced the President with the line “Guess who’s coming dinner,” BUT he has no friggin’ clue as to WHY that is offensive.

  10. Mr. Ganim, give your wife and kids a break. Stay home and love them, put your political aspirations on hold and maybe one day you will become economic development director of a big city like Rowland. Better yet, write a book or have Lennie do it for you, maybe they will make a movie and cast Keanu Reeves as you. Seriously, with all due respect Bridgeport has been the brunt of Stewie’s jokes, should we shoot for South Park too?

  11. Bridgeport gets what Bridgeport deserves.

A corrupt former mayor running and winning would seal this city’s coffin.

An incompetent mayor who’s running the city into the ground would do the same.

Real change … competent leadership … someone with a verifiable record of accomplishment … who has good relationships with the biz community & regional & state leaders (anyone who thinks Malloy is going to do anything for Finch is smoking crack) …

    That’s what Bridgeport needs.

Truth is, Foster has a bigger set of balls than any of these knuckleheads and she’s willing to do what needs to be done to get the city back on track. No one said it will be easy and it ain’t gonna happen overnight but with the right person as mayor, this city can come back.

For the first time in–um, ever?–we have someone who can lead Bridgeport with credibility. Someone who can begin to restore our tarnished reputation. Voting her into office would send a message loud & clear to the surrounding communities, state leaders & anyone interested in investing in Bridgeport–but who’s afraid to either because of the perceived corruption or real incompetence–that Bridgeport truly is open for business.

For the love of Pete people–wake up and get behind the candidate who can not only win but get the job done.

  12. Excellent post, Power. Believe me, there are many City employees who are behind MJF 100%. They have seen first hand the destructiveness caused by this totally incompetent administration. However, employees who Finch even thinks are supporting another candidate are being harassed and threatened. People are afraid for their jobs. Employees know we need a hero(ine) to save us or we are all going down in ashes. Keep up the good work, MJF and the Mary-Jane girls!

  13. The State Attorney General George Jepson should invoke State law and revoke Joe Ganim’s generous government pension because of his bribery and public theft convictions. Jepson is allowed to do so for public employees who break the law and violate the public trust. If Ganim’s pension is revoked he gets a lump sum payout for his contributions which he can then use to pay the City of Bridgeport back for all he stole, including the missed opportunities. Once he has really made restitution and is no longer benefiting from his decade of graft then we will know he is ready to begin anew for both the City and himself. That would be leadership. Until then he should stop embarrassing Bridgeport before the world.

  14. I consider this to be an intelligent group of bloggers, but seriously, wake the fuck up. Finch is going to steal this election and I promise you four more years of misery and increased taxes. All of you political insiders had better tell your pals to sit down and resolve this right now. If you want true change put aside your egos and work together for us.
