Mayor Joe Ganim is, for now, resisting intense pressure from some police officers to fire the chief he hired in late 2022.
Asked last week if he continues to have faith in top cop Roderick Porter, Ganim responded, “Yes, I do.”
“Especially in the area where it affects the public, the story is pretty clear,” he continued, referring to the city’s low crime statistics.
Still, the mayor said his administration will hire an outside legal firm — the nationwide Jackson Lewis — to examine complaints from a vocal group of officers alleging unfair treatment and, in some cases, discrimination when it comes to discipline and promotions.
Such accusations of a hostile work environment under Porter, who is Black and a retired Bridgeport captain, are not new. And in fact in January, the municipal law department had planned on engaging Jackson Lewis, then called it off.

Public safety appears satisfactory revealed by the statistics filed with the FBI. It seems factual and unchallenged by the people alleging harm from the leadership.
No word from the Police Commission ever, or so it seems to me as a reader.
What is the record of success in court or with other Boards or commissions of those who wish supposed injustices to be remedied? How many cases have been filed, with various courts, and where do they stand?
I am aware that pension plan rules can be complicated, confusing, and lead to errors. But more than likely they do not lead to fraud as mentioned above.
How many of the officers with grievances with local leadership reside in the City and as taxpayers bear the cost of legal or consulting firms retained to review the situation and restore order?
Hostile working conditions within any department are of concern, but who at this time is promoting a way to resolve the differences? Who are the adults in the room? Time will tell.
