Ganim: More Cops And Youth Programs Needed

Former Mayor Joe Ganim, seeking to win back his old job, will participate in a candlelight vigil with community leaders today at 5:30 on Trumbull Avenue, in the wake of Thursday’s shooting at Trumbull Gardens. Ganim issued the following statement:

“Last night, as many Bridgeporters slept, we witnessed a cowardly and senseless act of violence at the Trumbull Gardens apartments in the north end of our beloved city. This is the worst single day act of violence in our city in recent memory,” said former Bridgeport Mayor and mayoral candidate Joseph P. Ganim this morning.

“You know, we need to do more to protect our citizens from these types of cowardly and senseless acts. We must make sure our police department is adequately staffed and supported and we must increase community patrols. In addition, we must make sure that our young people are involved in productive and positive activities. Soon, school will end and thousands of Bridgeport youth will need something to do. We must do a better job at plugging them into productive and positive activities. We can do more! And, we must.”

Today, I will be visiting the hospitals and the Trumbull gardens lending my support and prayers to the community. We will hold a silent vigil and walk to bring peace, healing and support to our community. We invite the community, clergy, police officers and all concerned citizens to join us in this silent vigil and walk as we come together to love, support and encourage each other.

    1. I call BS on you. Wasn’t it Finch who was touting the lowest crime rates while holding a press conference in front of the grocery store where the clerk was killed a few months back? The cops were still on the scene. Ironically, down the street from this shooting. Finch allowed the PD to be sunk to these lows in staffing. Ganim was always on top of that. Hypocrisy at its worst.

    1. Andy Fardy, I totally agree with you. This community needs to step up and take control. Where are the local councilmen? They need to get involved and help coordinate some sort of neighborhood watch, cameras etc.

    1. Is it time for the TIPS program to be supported by Mayor and Police Chief? Anybody remember their past actions relative to that low cost, publicly safe way for local residents to SAY WHAT THEY SEE but in safety? Not telephone. Not twitter or email. Snailmail. An idea from voters and citizen activists around gun violence in past years, presented to the Council and for all purposes ignored by King Bill and General Gaudett (probably on orders because the idea did not originate in the MO)? Time will tell.

  1. donj, did you hold all white males accountable for the senseless murders in Sandy Hook, did you hold all white males accountable for the school shootings at Columbine or any of the other more than 50 school shootings by white males since 2000? How about the movie theater shooting or the shooting that almost killed congressperson Gabby Giffords?

You’re an idiot and a fool so shut up and crawl back into the hole you call home.

  2. Ganim, you idiot, cops respond to crime not prevent it. If you want crime prevention then the people in the area must step up and throw out the criminals in cooperation with the cops.

    1. Charlie, excellent post. Btw, has anyone driven by Steelpointe? All the carpenters, electricians etc. etc. Nice to see hundreds of workers.

Sidebar: I was at Barnum School today and did lunch at Coquito, excellent food. Did El Flaboyan close? Anyway, I had no problem parking on East Main Street. There are so many great Spanish restaurants there I highly recommend a visit and Steelpointe is just a minute away. I hope some of these businesses get patrons willing to explore.

Why hasn’t East Main Street (lower end) been designated as Spanish Town like Chinatown or Bridgeport’s Little Asia, Little Italy, Little Brazil (three of my favorite Brazilian buffets are just blocks from each other)?

    No more Guns Bass Pro!
    No more Guns Bill Finch!
    No more Guns Bass Pro!
    No more Guns Bill Finch!

  4. Joe Ganim,
It is good to hear from the candidates as well as the incumbent on City subjects especially those that appear to have left room for better action previous to a tragic event. In that regard perhaps you can raise the issue of the role of the Police Commission in the City of Bridgeport in looking out for all the things that make up a safe environment for citizens.

Your campaign manager is a long-term member of that body, yet I rarely hear any public comment about their work in the media. How did they view the decrease in manpower and what did they present to the City or to the voters if the City did not take their concerns seriously? It is public business and unfortunately in Bridgeport is ignored all too frequently until the “stuff” hits the fan and reveals those appointed to Boards and Commissions have never been properly oriented to their public duties nor subsequently trained and certainly not evaluated regularly for their competency at their tasks. What changes in appointments to Boards and Commissions might you suggest, mayoral candidate Joe Ganim? Time will tell.
