Game On! Moore Versus Musto For State Senate, Foster Care For Moore

Marilyn Moore
Marilyn Moore

Political activist Marilyn Moore has filed a candidate committee for State Senate setting up a rematch of her 2008 Democratic primary with Anthony Musto who occupies the city-suburban district. Moore has built an intriguing early coalition that includes former City Councilman Bob “Troll” Walsh as her treasurer and 2011 mayoral candidate Mary-Jane Foster as deputy treasurer, according to paperwork filed with the Connecticut State Elections Enforcement Commission.

Anti-establishment activists view Musto’s voting record as vulnerable in a Democratic primary this August. In 2008 Musto squeaked past Moore in the city-suburban 22nd Senate District that includes all of Trumbull, part of Monroe and the western portion of the city including the higher-turnout Black Rock, Brooklawn and North End neighborhoods. The number of registered Democrats in the Bridgeport portion of the district is roughly double the suburban registration.

Moore served as campaign manager for three Democratic insurgents who defeated the endorsed candidates  for school board in a primary last September. She’s participating in Connecticut’s Citizens Elections Program of publicly financed raises.

Musto walking
Anthony Musto will need his walking shoes against Moore.

Musto has drawn the ire of Bridgeport government reformers for killing a bill co-sponsored by Bridgeport State House members Jack Hennessy and Auden Grogins to enforce Bridgeport’s City Charter prohibiting city employees from serving on the City Council and eliminating conflicts of interests such as councilors approving their own wages and benefits. Musto feared alienating Bridgeport’s political establishment that opposed the bill. Hennessy, who has described Musto as “no friend of mine” says he will support Moore.

City Council President Tom McCarthy, a city employee who serves at the pleasure of Mayor Bill Finch, validated his allegiance to Musto’s opposition to the reform bill by having the state senator issue him the oath of office for his swearing in last December. McCarthy will be supporting Musto.

Musto was also chief architect, in his role as chair of the legislature’s Government Administration & Elections Committee, of watering down Connecticut’s landmark campaign finance reform, permitting additional special-interest money to flow into elections.

Musto was one of just two state senators to support public disclosure of images of slaughtered Sandy Hook children in defiance of the wishes of victims’ parents.

Mary-Jane Foster
Mary-Jane Foster joins Moore campaign team.

Moore supported Foster in her 2011 mayoral bid against Finch, running on her ticket as the candidate for city clerk.

Moore is executive director of The Witness Project, a community-based breast and cervical cancer education program for African American women. She also served as a legislative aide to former State Senator Ed Gomes whose base political support in the Wilbur Cross voting precinct was carved into Musto’s district by state Democratic redistricting leaders in an effort to make Musto’s seat safer from Republican challengers. Gomes says he was blindsided by the move. Ironically, that change could backfire against Musto in a primary where Moore is familiar with the electoral turf and has a close political relationship with Gomes. Wilbur Cross was one of many voting precincts last September where challengers ran up large wins against endorsed Democrats.

McCarthy, Musto
State Senator Anthony Musto swears in City Council President Tom McCarthy.

Musto brings a Trumbull political base to the table, the home town of Democratic State Party Chair Nancy DiNardo, Musto’s political godmother. Prior to Musto the 22nd Senate District was occupied by Republican Rob Russo and before that Finch before he was elected mayor.

  1. Good Luck, Marilyn! You seem to have the savvy, the smarts, integrity and work ethic along with a real understanding of Bridgeport to be the best candidate!

  2. Ron Mackey, it is not my move to make. I respect you and know you believe in Moore. She doesn’t support Steelepointe. I am very disappointed but not surprised in Mary-Jane Foster. Hennessy, Gomes and Walsh are no friends of mine and I will be supporting Anthony Musto unless there is a Republican candidate who is a Bridgeport supporter. I think it is safe to say I will be voting for Anthony Musto and will look forward to a spirited campaign. I wouldn’t count on the minority vote for Moore, especially around Wilbur Cross. Now, if Moore made economic development for Bridgeport her Number One priority, I’d give an ear. But I think Mayor Finch needs to be surrounded by pro Bridgeport, pro development officials. Anthony Musto most likely will resonate with like-minded individuals. If he does not take Bridgeport then Finch has a lot to worry about as far as his political future goes so start spending that money!!! 🙂

Would you please explain your constant rant about how Marilyn Moore doesn’t support Steal Point? And please once and for all be specific. What are you suggesting? She wants to leave it in its current state of disrepair? Never to develop anything there?
Are you suggesting because she has questioned the Finch administration on its plans and will not march lockstep in support of anything the mayor proposes she is antidevelopment?
Please Steve. Once and for all give me exact quotes as to what she said that makes her anti Steal Point.

    1. Bob, Ron, here is my move. I respect your desire to support Marilyn Moore. I find Moore to be a very charismatic speaker. I do not need to give specifics on Moore’s non-support of Steelepointe, as I am not running for office. It is Marilyn Moore’s job to convince the voters she is in fact supportive of Steelepointe. She has never once responded on this blog regarding my comments and therefore obviously not interested in my vote. Good luck convincing donors who are interested in Bridgeport’s rebirth. Me, I’ll sit this one out and watch. I of course wish everyone well.

  4. Marilyn, I am happy to see you have decided to run and you have my support. I have followed your involvement in city and social issues and know you will act on behalf of all the citizens of the city vs being politically correct. You have fought for education, quality of life and a balanced budget.

  5. I like Marilyn a lot. As far as her Bridgeport strategy goes, I think she could do pretty well in the high-turnout areas. The fact this Senate seat represents all the highest-turnout areas in Bridgeport surely does work in her favor. To safeguard against the Trumbull/Monroe factor, a win in Bridgeport will need to be BIG.

A nice strong economic message would help her plight in Bridgeport as well, and she may be able to take that messaging to gain some ground in Trumbull/Monroe with some tweaks. She will need to deploy HIGHLY targeted strategies in Trumbull and Monroe to score a “relative win” there. They are not Bridgeport, so the messaging should reflect that fact. Those two towns will need to know she is not all about Bridgeport. They will need to exist in her messaging, and be convinced of it. She won’t need to win those towns, but she will need to win Bridgeport with statistics that offset the margin.

OR ~ I could be dead wrong. 😉

  6. *** Ms. Moore, it’s time to renew your political platform for Bpt, Trumbull, Stratford and any other town in your political district. Don’t rely on the past or who you’ve helped get elected; do your homework and reach out and touch average white voters in the neighboring towns before Musto; you’ll do much better and feel more comfortable later in Bpt as you’re catching up with voters and supporters! You must get the women’s vote in the surrounding towns and of course the minority votes in Bpt to really blow Musto out of the water! GOOD LUCK AND YOU HAVE MY SUPPORT SINCE I’M NOT IN YOUR SENATE DISTRICT! ***

    1. Yeah, the female vote is a MUST in Trumbull and Monroe. That is what I meant by Targeted, I just did not want to say it because people read this blog who would deny they do … 🙂

  7. Lololololololololololololol. Oh yeah, target the women’s vote. Musto is anti-women? What are you targeting? Women who vote with their uterus? Did Musto become an anti-women Republican overnight? Honestly, snap out of it!!! Speaking of David Walker, is he running? Is he joining Mustang in his support for Ms. MOORE? Has Mary-Jane Foster thrown in the towel on her political career? Mustang, will we ever be working on a campaign again? Seems like it will be next decade.

    1. Regarding David Walker, I think I heard, if I am not mistaken, he will be in Hartford on Monday. On the steps of the state Capitol, Mr. Walker with Jerry Labriola at his side, will make his announcement. This could become very interesting. He is certainly a very qualified candidate. So I’m wondering if Mojo, Bob Walsh, Mustang and Ron Mackey will be supporting both candidates.

      1. Steve, I’m supporting David Walker to be the Republican candidate for Lieutenant Governor, he will be the best secret weapon of Governor Malloy to WIN his reelection. Run Dave, run.

    2. I said no such thing, Steve. I said NOTHING about Musto. I have no idea what his position is with women. I was only stating what I though the campaign strategy for MARILYN might look like if she wants to be competitive or even win. I also said nothing about female body parts. I said nothing about Walker either. Where did this response come from?

    3. *** Obviously Stevie does not understand what targeting the women’s vote is so he’s got to come up with it being an anti-Musto thing against women in general, “HELLO!” I’m sure Ms. Moore understands that particular part of Musto’s Senate district has never had to my knowledge a winning female representative or a minority person for that matter. So reaching out to the league of women voters in that entire Senate district may prove to be quite helpful at the polls (women to women). This campaign is going to be like a tick that’s been imbedded in the skin for some time and is comfortable blood sucking, it’s going to take some patience and careful removal tactics to get all of it out! So get ready to reach out and touch a voter’s hand and whisper in their ear, “DUMP MUSTO!” ***

      1. I can’t wait until Monday morning when David Walker will be in Hartford on the steps of the state Capitol, with Jerry Labriola at his side, and make his announcement he is running for Lt Governor as a Republican and he will tell us all what he is going to do for women voters.

  8. Let the games begin. It’s long past time we have a State Senator who will stand up and do what’s right for Bridgeport. Musto’s list of failings is long. But for starters, his failure to support Hennessy and Grogins in their efforts to keep City employees off the City Council is a profile in political cowardice and a slap in the face to his constituents who overwhelmingly supported this reform. Marilyn, as we used to say back in the day “I’m fired up and ready to go!” Let’s get to work.

    1. John From Black Rock,
Former state senator Ed Gomes always stuck up for Bridgeport and Andres Ayala Jr. has been since he took office also. To me, the Governor, like Musto, has totally forgotten Bridgeport except when needing the votes while campaigning.

      1. Slurp! Chosen 1–Dan Malloy has forgotten Bridgeport? Really? Gee the Millions of dollars that have been coming our way since he took office for Steelepointe must not count.

          1. Everyone laughs at me? Chosen 1, when you grow a pair and identify yourself as well as have something relevant to say, I’d listen. IDIOTS like yourself feel confident to make insulting comments because you hide behind an alias. The fact Lennie Grimaldi and Ray allow it is sad. MOST blogs have done away with trolls like yourself who entertain themselves at the expense of others. If you have nothing positive to contribute, I’d suggest you shut the FUCK up!

    2. John Soltis, alias John from Black Rock … This one is specifically for you. Before Chris Caruso made the detention center his battle, it started weeks earlier with a letter I wrote to the Connecticut Post. THERE IS A PAPER TRAIL AND A LETTER TO THE EDITOR TO PROVE MY POINT. I sent a letter to Mr. Musto’s office and he had responded as well as attended the protests I was also part of since I was one of the 6 people who attended all the meetings as well as making most of the phone calls to have people attend. Personally, I walked the entire Nob Hill, Eastwood and Huntington Inn complex. That being said, I can assure you Mr. Musto was helpful as well as the Mayor, finally in stopping the detention center. Enough said on that proposal Mr. Soltis and thank you for identifying yourself.

      1. Thank you for getting the ball rolling on this issue. However, prior to your good work Senator Musto was hailing the detention Center as the greatest thing since sliced bread.

  9. Musto has demonstrated time and again he neither understands Bridgeport (anyone remember the girls’ detention Center issue?) nor is Bridgeport his first priority. This will not be the case with Marilyn. And for those of you who don’t already know, I am also know as John Soltis–that one was for you, Mr. Auerbach.

      1. David, you are just all over the place. I can see the Republicans just gravitating to you as fast as the Democrats. I have to now agree with Ron Mackey, run David, run!!!

        1. David Walker, let me take that back. I want you to know on December 2 2013 I had listened to your complete address to the common council. It was most impressive regarding the future of the City. In 1989, Republican mayor and personal friend, Mary C. Moran, declared bankruptcy in the City of Bridgeport. Moran was 25 years before her time. I do believe if the City does not address the issues Mr. Walker raised, the City just may be heading in the same direction. The difference between then and now? Well major cities are being given a green light to explore bankruptcy. We do not need to go down that path again and I would hate to be the 21st century mayor who had to declare bankruptcy because I didn’t want to face the obvious signs year after year. The city needs to address Mr. Walker’s issues and concerns so the City can continue its forward movement.

        1. If he’s a Republican, he can only vote as a Republican. At this point, he probably has no clue who his party’s Senatorial candidate is, so why would he make such a premature comment?
