Flatto Scraps Public Facilities Department’s Scrap-Metal Cash Side Deals

From Brian Lockhart, CT Post:

City Finance Director Kenneth Flatto has put an end to side scrap-metal sales in the Public Facilities Department and taken control of an off-the-books petty cash fund that contained the proceeds.

“I have worked with Public Facilities to make sure what they did have (in petty cash) has been brought back into a regular city account and deposited,” Flatto told Hearst Connecticut Media late this week.

He said his office received “a little over $6,000.”

The Bridgeport Police Department’s Office of Internal Affairs, in response to an anonymous letter sent to the City Council, is probing the scrap-metal sales.

Normally scrap metal collected at Bridgeport’s transfer station is sold to dealers and the proceeds are deposited in the city budget.

  1. Does the investigation into this illegal practice stop with City Finance Director Kenneth Flatto proclaiming that he has put an end to side scrap-metal sales in the Public Facilities Department? If this is the case does that mean that no one is to be held responsible?

  2. Also Ken Flatto said that every department head that has responded said no.
    What does that mean?
The day that this was first discovered every department head should have been ordered to respond in writing IMMEDIATELY.
No BS stories like every department head who has responded has said no. Weak. Very weak. But what can you expect.

  3. Based on Ganim’s background and the Police Chief’s duplicity in his past political corruption they should have both recused themselves and ask the State Pilice to investigate.
And given Ken Flatto’s comments he should also recused himself.

  4. Since the dawn of industry, the country that rules manufacturing has ruled the world. No exceptions.
The current scrap metal fiasco underscores the local significance of that. Anything manufactured is rare and worthwhile. America never lost its taste for manufactured goods. Inflation is the story of how we surrendered our lead.
In 1965, America made the worst trade in the history of geopolitics. No city was hurt more than Bridgeport.
