Finch Opens Electric Vehicle Charging Station Downtown

From city Communications Director Brett Broesder:

Bridgeport Mayor Bill Finch announced that the state’s largest city has opened another electric vehicle charging station at the intersection of State Street and John Street. This is part of his ongoing effort to beat back carbon emissions in the state’s largest city in order to help ensure our kids and grandkids breathe cleaner air. (Governor’s program details here)

“Bridgeport is a national leader in green energy and getting greener every day,” said Mayor Bill Finch. “This investment is an important part of growing our green economy and creating green jobs. At the same time we are giving our families a clean, safe place to live for generations to come.”

This is Bridgeport’s second electric vehicle charging station with the other located at City Hall on Golden Hill Street. The station is marked with an “EV Connecticut” sign and has the ability to charge two cars at once. Mayor Finch’s administration has focused on transportation options that reduce our reliance on modes of transit that produce high carbon emissions.

Mayor Finch’s announcement comes on the heels of a new state program that was launched to support electric vehicles.

“I applaud the work of Governor Malloy to complement the initiatives here in Bridgeport,” said Mayor Bill Finch.

Governor Malloy recently announced that $1 million will be put into an electric vehicle incentive program. Consumers will be able to claim rebates on purchases and leases for electric vehicles. This program includes getting bespoke EV charging bay line marking to meet the demand for charging stations.

  1. And this reduces property taxes, brings jobs, improves education, and fixes the roads how? Can the Electorate get much louder?

The Green crap is self-indulgence. We want our money spent on important things that improve the relevant issues now; not spent on getting our ex-mayor a new job when he loses.

  2. Great. All two of you electric car owners can go for it now. What a waste of time and money. Keep touting these silly worthless accomplishments Finch while Joe is out there connecting with people in high-crime areas who don’t own any cars let alone an electric one. Pure absurdity.

  3. Can the many city-owned Escalades and major gas guzzlers benefit from these stations? Perhaps investing in low-mileage low-emissions city fleet cars might have been a better investment.

    1. Excellent post Jennifer. The only footprint I want to see is the one on the seat of the mayor’s pants when the voters give HIM THE BOOT.
This is such silliness. Hey Brett, how many electric cars are registered in the city of Bridgeport by the way?

  4. We all understand the power of incumbency, but this relentless spin at taxpayer expense is sickening. Where are the details of the rebate program? Is Finch taking credit for it? Next, Finch (through his ministry of public enlightenment) will take credit for inventing electricity.

  5. Does Finch drive a Leaf, Volt or Prius? Highly doubtful. I am not too informed of what the mayor drives, but it is probably one of the city-owned Explorers or Escalades. Stop preaching bullshit to the taxpayers. Drive a Prius and get solar panels installed on your home’s entire roof. Until then, it’s all BS.

  6. Those rebates for buying or leasing electric cars are not infinite. There is only so much money to be given out and it will go to first-come first-served until the money runs out. Plus it’s on a sliding scale. The larger capacity battery car you buy, the larger the rebate.

Next question: How does this work? I am sure the electricity isn’t for free. So will you have to swipe a credit card? Also how long will it take to recharge and can you be carjacked or mugged while waiting?

  7. The posts have become more and more ridiculous. I have friends who actually visit Bridgeport Downtown and have made use of the vehicle charging station while patronizing downtown restaurants. They are proud of the amazing 120 miles a gallon they get on their Toyota Prius hybrids. Sure they pay $40 grand for the hybrid but they love it and it is the wave of the future. Imagine, the state’s largest city has two. This is Fairfield county. People on this blog talk like we live in Hooterville. Better yet, they post as if their Mayoral hopeful would not support these efforts. Making fun of the Mayor for his concern for the environment? I think young voters would be thrilled.

    1. No, the problem is he is using taxpayer money to tout his accomplishments in his bid for reelection. That is what is getting under folks’ skins.

Just install them and keep up with the times. That is what most municipal CEOs do.

    2. Steve, I think you are fibbin’. You have friends who have made use of these charging stations while having dinner downtown???
And what restaurant were they dining at when they parked their $40,000 cars downtown?
There is no downtown restaurant at the intersection of State St and John St as Wingnut points out.
      Pretty pathetic, Steve.

      1. Bob Walsh and other bloggers, Bob Walsh, you sir are pathetic, obsolete and insulting. Let me respond to your insulting and ignorant post. The charge station was at 45 Lyon Terrace and we dined at the Barnum Pub on a Sunday afternoon. We had reservations and bottomless Bloody Marys. We had reservation for 6. You cannot be seated without a reservation on a Sunday. Bob, you know what is pathetic, that on my pathetic salary I patronize our city and support local businesses. I am proud of Bridgeport and entertain many out-of-towners here. I am as optimistic with my social circle, of which I have many, as I am on this blog. You act like a hillbilly with a limited frame of reference. I may enjoy being a sporadic bullshit artist, but a liar and a fibber is not part of this man’s persona. Bob Walsh, you never fail to amaze me. Kudos to Mayor Finch for having his eye on the future while Hillbillies here are clueless, living in the dark.

        1. Steve, truly you are our own Bridgeport-loving “sporadic bullshit artist.” It seems only last week or so you shared recently selling two or three of five real estate interests in the City to put some more dinero in your sombrero, or something like that. As a man of property and therefore some wealth you choose to be a part-time educator in City schools (as well as on Only In Bridgeport). Therefore should you complain about a “pathetic salary” when you are doing so much good public service and when THERE ARE SO MANY GOOD JOBS JUST GOING BEGGING, WITHOUT CANDIDATES, HERE IN BRIDGEPORT? Time will tell.

          1. Mr. Marshall, I really needed to sell those properties. I am not a person of wealth. The fact I have family living the life on Central Park West does nothing for my bank account. I am suffering on my salary and expect to make changes. I wouldn’t want anyone to believe I am using any money from the Fox Auerbach foundation to support my dining experiences in Downtown Bridgeport, I have had a good life and traveled around the world many times. I have met great people and dined with royalty. Honest to G-d. I am not a victim and I am ready to pick up my glove and get back in the Game. The selling of property was an act of paying off debt and having nothing to do with my lack of love or support with this city. I have no problem sharing this personal business as I did many times sharing with hundreds of former and current employees at Home Depot as I trained the entire northeast corridor when I was the Administrative Manager for Home Depot. If there are good jobs going to waste I will find one because these days I am not living, it’s all a blur and people still ask for my time for free. You gotta love it!

    1. I was thinking the same thing since those streets are parallel to each other. The station pictured is John St. at Broad St. Right next to The Margaret E. Morton Government Center.

  8. The mayor does drive a Chevy Volt and there are no Escalades. It only keeps coming up because the article on the chief’s lawsuit, that was from an accident two or three years ago, he also drives a hybrid now.
