Samia Suliman
Ex City Council member Samia Suliman is the leading candidate to replace Jazmarie Melendez who resigned a few weeks ago creating a vacancy in the Upper East Side 138th.
Suliman received the backing of town committee Democrats to replace her as the other council member to represent the district.
Council vacancies are filled by the legislative body but they have historically embraced recommendations by the respective district pols.
Several people have signed up for the public speaking portion of the council session presumably to lend voice to an alternative candidate.
Filling the vacancy is the first order of business Monday night followed by Council President Aidee Nieves’ realignment of committees with the new appointment.
Though not noted on the agenda, the full body is expected to vote on Mayor Joe Ganim’s budget proposal for the fiscal year starting July 1 after alterations are completed by the Budget & Appropriations Committee over the next few days.
May 13 is the deadline for the full council to act on the budget.
