Don’t Ya Prefer A DQ Blizzard?

Blizzard of 1888
On March 12, 1888 a blizzard buried Bridgeport in two feet of snow. Residents here on Broad Street downtown dig out from the Blizzard of 1888.

Yikes! This was a big one. I’ve been digging out all morning and more work to do. My blizzard of choice is made by Dairy Queen. This one is the queen of storms in some time. The Blizzard of 1888 dumped about two feet. In February 1978 more than two feet of snow caused Governor Ella Grasso to close down the state and order a ban on all non-essential traffic until work crews could clear the way. Seems like snow clearance is far more efficient than 30 years ago.

In 1978 I was a baby scribe for the Bridgeport Post and Telegram, forerunner papers of the Connecticut Post, writing obituaries and weather stories. I’d call the National Weather Service at Sikorsky Memorial Airport to write weather updates for the morning Telegram. On the day the blizzard hit my article noted there’d be a dusting of snow. The article damn near got me killed and not from the snow, but from screaming readers.

“You’re an idiot.”

“But that’s what the weather guy told me.”

“Yeah, well, his name’s not on the damn article!”

For years my newsroom buds reminded me of that weather story misfire. No mercy from that crowd.

Well, I’ve got lots more digging out to do today. Stay warm, loosen those muscles before digging. Don’t be a hero. Check ya later.

  1. Here it is 3 PM and we are still waiting for the plows. We had a sander here last night and then a pick-up truck with a plow came down the middle of the road and that was at 10 PM, since then nothing and we have snow up to our asses.
Mayor moonbeam what do I do with the trash that is due to be picked up tomorrow? I can’t get it to the street because it has not been plowed. Do I wait up for the plow and then put out the garbage even if it is 3 AM? Mr. Mayor take your snow emergency and stick it.

    1. I think town committee is fortunate to be able to diss the Mayor of Bridgeport, where he served for 30 years. He understands impunity. I wonder if he would’ve said that 10 years ago.

Either way, it doesn’t matter …

Because if you listen carefully, you can hear a chorus of angry angels singing, stick it, Andy.

      It sounds great.

      1. Local Eyes as usual your posts are rambling and yes I would have said it 10 years ago. If the angels are angry it’s not at me it’s at the incompetence that you seem to condone every chance you get.

  2. AM I THE ONLY PERSON HERE who thinks America’s financial disaster, which is currently raging, omnipresent, widespread and growing daily won’t turn into a political issue soon?

Our current situation prevents a sense of national happiness and is conducive to civic interruptions. Spotters report unpleasant activity. (nod)

Bridgeport is an incubator for this growing trend.

  3. Received this from the Mayor’s Office:

“Trash, Recycling Pickup to Resume Tuesday. The Department of Public Works has announced that sanitation and recycling pickups will resume on Tuesday morning. Residents whose regular pickup day was Monday should place their trash and recycling at the curb by 4 a.m., Tuesday morning for pickup. All sanitation and recycling pickups will be delayed by one day through the rest of this week.”

  4. *** Lots of snow to be moved by the city so it will take time, no? Main roads have priority & secondary roads have to wait ’til mother nature helps out. Seems the trucks pass once every 4 hours on main roads instead of making a few passes before moving on. And as far as odd & even parking is concerned, it’s a joke, no? Wonder what the winter bill for snow removal will be come spring? *** What’s in your wallets? ***

  5. I hear some City Employees (Public Works) aren’t answering their pagers or phones. I’m sure they started feeling sick when they heard of the coming storm. I can just imagine what the floors will look like at the P.D. by the time I return.
