Coviello Withdraws Name From School Board Race To Rectify Candidate Excess–A Moot Point?

UPDATE: Still no official word from Democratic Register of Voters Sandi Ayala regarding ballot certification for Mary-Jane Foster and her slate of candidates for the September 13 primary for mayor.

A ballot issue involving Foster’s proposed slate of Board of Education candidates popped up today that has delayed official word from local elections officials. The judge presiding in the court challenge of the state takeover of schools has ruled no primary for BOE seats will take place, according to a report in the Connecticut Post.

Foster’s slate had proposed four BOE candidates for three school board openings with the top three vote performers becoming the party nominees for November. Election officials, in discussions with lawyers, notified the Foster camp that only three candidates for BOE should be allowed. Charlie Coviello, former mayoral candidate, had been one of the school board candidates on Foster’s slate. To resolve the issue Coviello withdrew his name as a BOE candidate. This now leaves three Foster school board candidates for three slots, assuming they’re certified by Ayala and the court orders them on the ballot. Lawyers for a variety of interests involved in the legal challenge against the state takeover of schools met again today in Waterbury Superior Court to discuss an expedited court decision. The Bridgeport Democratic Town Committee, in light of the reconstituted Board of Education appointed by acting State Education Commissioner George Coleman, did not endorse school board candidates. Foster’s challenge slate of school board members say the state takeover is unconstitutional and their names should be placed on the ballot.

    1. Seriously, NORTH45? If you insist on representing Finch on this blog, you could at least make a lame attempt at intelligent, fact-supported claims on his behalf, and give up on the romper-room diatribes.

  1. Coviello is a moot point just like NORTH45. NORTH45, however, seems like an attack dog going up against a pride of lions. I wonder what position NORTH45 holds in the soon-to-be-defunct Finch administration.

  2. It was too bad we lost credible people on the BOE like Tom Mulligan, Leticia Colon and the strong leadership skills of Jorge Garcia. Let’s hope this new board can stand tall like they did.

    1. Mary, you must be kidding me! We lost? Credible? They quit, threw their hands up and said “No mas.”
Stand tall like they did? You must be talking about Sauda, Maria and Bobby. Who is George Garcia?

  3. Godiva–With all due respect Mary-Jane has gained the endorsement of the Cosmetic Dental Association of America with Charlie on board.

Joel–Barbara B is the one who said no mas. Jorge Garcia worked for the BOE. A strong leader within the maintenance dept, hand-picked by a great leader, John Fabrizi.

    1. Yes, Charlie was definitely instrumental in garnering that endorsement. The Westport Lunch Ladies crowd has also given their undying support & endorsement. Now I’m wondering this, with all due respect, reputedly Charlie got some donations from people who own strip clubs. MJF is adamantly protesting their existence, so how is it she even considered putting him on her slate to begin with? Isn’t that just a bit contraindicated?
