A superior court judge has rejected City Councilwoman Maria Pereira’s attempt to toss out last November’s sweeping voter-approved changes to the municipal charter, including a currently-delayed ethics overhaul.
Head municipal attorney Tyisha Toms announced the news Tuesday night to fellow officials in Democratic Mayor Joe Ganim’s administration.
“The court concluded that the plaintiff lacked standing,” Toms explained in an email.
In other words, Judge Charles Reed determined Pereira was not personally harmed by and therefore could not challenge the 2025 overhaul of the document that lays out the rules for how Bridgeport government functions.
Reed’s 18-page Aug. 13 decision notes, “Importantly, the complaint does not assert any direct injury to the plaintiff’s personal or legal interests — necessary elements of classical aggrievement for standing purposes — but states only generalized grievances as a resident of the city about the notices and procedures at issue.”
