Company For Redistricting Commission

gerrymander protest
Mary-Jane Foster, center, a 2011 mayoral candidate, was among a group that recently protested a Republican move to push Bridgeport into the 3rd Congressional District.

Governor Dan Malloy says it’s nuts. So does Mayor Bill Finch. And so far at least 1500 others who have signed a petition agree the Republican effort to move Bridgeport into Connecticut’s 3rd Congressional District is a gerrymander to solidify GOP control of the 4th District.

John Hartwell, a local organizer for the political action group Democracy for America, will be among members that will present the petition Monday morning to a commission examining changes to congressional district lines. The commission has just a few more days to resolve the issue otherwise it goes to the State Supreme Court.

“There will be a short press conference at 11:00 in the Legislative Office Building, and I’d love anyone from Bridgeport who opposes this gerrymandering to come and speak,” says Hartwell. “After the press event we’ll go to the offices of the Majority and Minority leaders for both the House and Senate to present the petition signatures.”

Opponents to the Republican legislative move claim:
• Combining Bridgeport with New Haven will dilute the voice of the people of two of our state’s largest cities
• It is a disservice to voters to remove Bridgeport for purely political reasons. For Shame!
• Keep us a MIXED-INCOME area district!
