UPDATE: The Board of Education approved the measure Monday night.

Commentary by Dr. Khaled Elleithy, President of the Bridgeport Islamic Community Center, regarding the importance of adding Eid al-Adha to the Bridgeport school calendar.

  2. Pencil Box, while you are at it. There shouldn’t be any makeup snow days that eat up the summer recess. Snow days should be taught remotely. I am assuming, of course, that the BBOE body used all that co-vid money and two academic years off and remote learning were applied and developed to have any swon day taught remotely.

    I mean two whole years of no in-class teaching, and 100 million in extra funds were spent wisely by the BBOE to build and develop a stronger, tech-advanced, driven education apparatus that would allow such things as remote snow days for its student body and not have to be added at the end of the year.

    However, I am wary that you guys/BBOE members, Judas, the Port school system will squander money and opportunities to make such advancements on behalf of the Port’s student body and system. JS

    1. I have read the comments from Dr. Khaled Elleithy, President of Bridgeport Islamic Center which ask us to consider recognizing student dignity, youth safety, and equal opportunity to learn in our schools.
      I am happy to see Joe Sokolovic, who has brought this matter to OIB attention for similar reasons, lets us know where he stands, in print as well as at public meetings where he represents us with his vote.
      I am unimpressed by the wide ranging comments of Robert Teixiera. From snow days, to criticism of money wasting, to the recent school bus parking ordinance that has a hearing happening AFTER passing the City Council Ordinance Committee. He sees these as “really nothing to think about. No brainers” and dismisses the time that goes into making public decisions for the benefit of all of the public but has time to comment 24 or more times to OIB subject matter within the week, without rceiving ONE click of approval, while five others posted 10 responses which garnered NINE clicks +. What is the reason RT writes? Is it only to use up his life on earth, to recognize the Prophet, criticize his neighbors, and diminish his output by closing with ‘just saying’.

        You may or may not be confused. So let me clarify. A no-brainer is not to have snow days
        accumulate and be added on the back end of the school year. They should be taught remotely.

    2. It is illegal under state statute in CT to count remote learning as a school day.

      Not sure it’s something I would support it anyway.

      Kids need to be kids.

      Remote learning is a poor substitute for in person instruction.

        Pencil box, I think you are missing the point. I agree that remote learning is a subsitute to in person learning. When you say kids need to be kids, I agree with that too, and enjoying a full summer vacation is my point of remote learning on snow days. Every day you have cuts into their summer vacation.

        How many snow days cut into their vacation last year? 7, perhaps? I wouldn’t even diminish remote learning in a hybrid capacity.

        While we can debate the pros and cons of remote access learning, there in on debate on the benefits of tech availability. i.e., laptops and learning software for the students and the teachers. That is without question,

        That being said, I would bet that the majority of the Port student body don’t get Chromebooks to take home as part of their curriculum with course education software. But I would bet most if not all, suburban schools upgrade to tech advice for their school district.

        Which goes to my post about “quanding” the funds and opportunity during COVID. But I am not telling you something you don’t already know. JS

  5. A proud moment. It was important to me as a board member to be instrumental in bringing forth the second holiday approval for our Muslim community.

    It is important that our Muslim students and their families not have to choose between their faith and education. In this era of resurgent racism and intolerance, inclusiveness and a sense of belonging is more important.

    Although equity was needlessly delayed, the Muslim Community showed up and successfully advocated for themselves.

    Thank you to everybody that helped pave the way.
