Bridgeport Songwriter Gary DeCarlo

Two kids from Bridgeport Paul Leka and Gary DeCarlo wrote an anthem that took on a life of its own. Paul Leka passed away in 2011. His former bandmate Gary DeCarlo left us this week. This song leaves an indelible mark.

  1. I remember when I was kid I would listen to Paul Leka and his buddies, harmonizing in the shower room at Went Field Park on the West End.
The Caretaker of the park lived on the second floor of the Park’s old brick building, he would open the shower room just about every Saturday afternoon for all neighborhood do-wop groups.
The acoustics in that shower room was great, sometimes you would have three or four groups waiting for their turn. The great thing about Leka and Decarlo’s Na Na Hey Hey Kiss Him Goodbye song it was one of the first Rock bands to use a couple of Xylophones in their song, rumor has it that the Xylophones came from Bassick High Schools Marching Band.
