Barbecue In Black Rock: McMahon To Open Headquarters In Shays’ Backyard

Linda McMahon
Linda McMahon to open HQ in The Port.

Take that! Republican U.S. Senate candidate Linda McMahon will celebrate the opening of a field office in Bridgeport on Saturday with a barbecue as she hopes to barbecue GOP opponent Chris Shays in an Aug. 14 primary. The McMahon campaign has selected 3142 Fairfield Avenue in Black Rock, the base of the city’s Republican vote, less than a mile from Shays’ condo on Grovers Avenue. The party starts 6 p.m. with the BBQ in a parking lot across the street from the Bridgeport campaign office.

Calling it Super Saturday, McMahon’s Campaign Manager Corry Bliss reports in an eblast that a team of campaign volunteers will knock on 10,000 doors and make 10,000 calls starting Saturday morning out of each of the campaign’s eight field offices.

Shays, Lamont
Shays wishes he had Ned Lamont's moolah.

“Linda will spend the day visiting our field offices, firing up volunteers, working the phones, and knocking on doors so we can reach our goals. When the day is done, we will all get together for a barbecue celebrating the grand opening of our field office in Bridgeport. You are invited to join Linda for the food and festivities starting at 6:00 p.m. We’ll be making calls and knocking on doors in North Haven, Bridgeport, Cromwell, East Lyme, Farmington, Norwalk, Waterbury and Windham. We need your help to reach our goals.”

The latest Q Poll shows Shays has a lot of ground to make up to close the gap among GOP voters against party-endorsed McMahon. Shays acknowledged recently he doesn’t have McMahon’s financial firepower by declaring he’ll not have the dough for a television buy in the weeks heading into the primary now five weeks away.

A campaign operation in Bridgeport is a statement by McMahon she’s ceding nothing to Shays in the primary while making a play to perform stronger in Bridgeport in the November general election. Shays’ campaign headquarters is located in Stratford. Party-endorsed Chris Murphy and ex Connecticut Secretary of the State Susan Bysiewicz will duke it out for the Democratic nomination on Aug. 14. Murphy has a Bridgeport campaign operation on Main Street in the North End.

  1. Black Rock base of Republican vote in Bridgeport? You are better of saying Winthrop and Blackham. John McCain out-polled in those two precincts than he did at Black Rock. McCain 702 at Black Rock 2008 and he got 911 at Winthrop and 951 at Blackham. Black Rock is solid Democrat.

    1. donj, the highest proportion of registered Republicans reside in Black Rock. Winthrop and Blackham precincts, with a relative number of GOP voters, are much larger than the Black Rock precinct and with significantly higher D and U voters.

    2. All these years and you still don’t seem to have learned anything, donj. Democrats can’t vote in a Republican primary, so it doesn’t matter how “solid Democrat” the district is at this point.

  2. Black Rock might have a few more moderate/Shays Republicans there, wouldn’t it? I would think Linda’s Bridgeport base, such as it is, is among the North End Republicans.

  3. *** Not in Shays’ backyard will there be any GOP hanky-panky type of barbecue goings on! MIB will be checking any type of permits that can be checked as well as the ribs, etc. to be inspected by the city’s health inspectors too! *** VOTE SHAYS! ***

  4. Some of the long-time politicians, like old athletes, don’t know when it’s time to go into that good night. As nice a guy as Shays has appeared to be, he milked the system towards the end of his congressional career, taking all sorts of junkets to keep his name in the forefront.
Despite the aura of spending, McMahon has earned the right to represent the Reps. She learned using trial by fire the last time. She’ll be a good candidate and Murphy will have his job cut out for him. Bysiewicz is nothing more than another political fly who has done little to get to the next level of constituency representation except show up for photo ops and the like.

  5. They had a US Senate seat on sale at the Woodbury Commons Premium Outlets right off the NYS Thruway in Harriman, but I think Linda is a smart shopper and knows the one up for sale in Connecticut could be a better buy.

    1. Yes … and they still serve a really good hotdog.

The very best hotdog stand in the Bpt/Stfd area was the Crickett in Stratford. Oh, how I miss those long dogs with spicy mustard and red relish!

  6. I don’t see how the Republican can win with this being a presidential election year. I expect Obama to have strong coattails here in CT.

Whomever will be best for Bridgeport will get my support. I don’t trust any of them to do anything positive at the national level, so the best I can hope for is they bring home the bacon.

  7. B’port Rising, Obama strong? Really? Based on what? Shays was defeated because Obama came into town and folks wanted change. I think for most people things haven’t changed for the better.
