Police have made an arrest in the 2015 drowning death of Wayne Bentley, 42 of West Haven, who was killed August 1 from a fight outside Chubby’s bar and grill, 3488 Fairfield Avenue in Black Rock. The medical examiner ruled it a homicide.

On Tuesday Richard de Carvalho, 33, turned himself into police headquarters following issuance of arrest warrant. He was charged with negligent homicide, assault and breach of peace. Bond was set at $500,000, according to information released by public safety spokesman Michael Giannotti.

Shortly after 1 a.m. August 1, 2015 Bridgeport and Fairfield police responded to a fight outside of Chubby’s that spilled into Ash Creek that divides the two communities.

Detective Richard Lariccia was among the investigators.

*** Two drunks fighting in the back lot, one gets knocked out as they fight in the shallow water and the other just leaves without thinking, maybe I should pull this guy out of the water and on to the dryer shore so he doesn’t drown, no? Too Bad and Too Late! ***

Chubby’s is the first restaurant in Bridgeport section, Black Rock when approached by Post Road from Fairfield. Some years ago, before there were NRZ rules and a special designation was applied to development regarding an arts and entertainment district. I am not sure about that designation or application of a district today. Perhaps a committee might see if swimming lessons for bar patrons at low tide will qualify for a grant. Time will tell.
