Another Snow Emergency, Will It Ever End!

From Mayor Finch:

Mayor Finch Declares Snow Emergency Beginning at 5 p.m. Today

In force until 5 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 27

No Parking on Snow Emergency Streets;

Alternate Side of the Street Parking

in Force on All Other Roadways Until Further Notice

Due to the impending winter storm, Mayor Bill Finch has declared a snow emergency beginning today [Wednesday] at 5 p.m., extending through 5 p.m., Thursday, Jan. 27.

Residents must move their cars off posted snow emergency streets by 5 p.m. tonight. Snow emergency streets are marked with white signs with red lettering.

Alternate side of the street parking rules are in effect for all other streets until further notice. As of 5 p.m. this evening, residents should park their cars on the even-numbered side of the street, and then move their cars to the odd-numbered side of the street by 7 a.m., Thursday, Jan. 27.

The City will enforce the snow emergency parking rules, which means Bridgeport police will ticket and/or tow vehicles that are left parked on snow emergency streets, and those improperly parked on all other streets.

“We need everyone’s cooperation. The only way our crews can properly clear the streets for our emergency vehicles, residents and visitors is for everyone to move their cars off snow emergency streets, and obey alternate side of the street parking rules,” said Mayor Bill Finch.

Parking is available at several areas throughout the City including, the surface lots across the street from the Ballpark at Harbor Yard; North End Library; Veterans Memorial Park (entrance off Madison Avenue), Black Rock Bank and Trust; municipal lot adjacent to Ash Creek Saloon; City Health Department at 752 E. Main Street; lot adjacent to the former Waltersville School; Achievement First/Old Barnum School, and the open area under Route 25/8 overpass at Main and Catherine Streets.

The following Board of Education parking lots also are available: Bassick and Central High Schools, Cesar Batalla, Park City Magnet, JFK Campus, Barnum/Waltersville, Blackham, Whittier, Jettie Tisdale and Luis Munoz Marin schools. If school is in session on Thursday, the Mayor and the Superintendent of Schools ask the public’s cooperation in moving their cars as soon as possible so lots can be cleared for access by students and teachers.

Note from Bridgeport Police Dept.: Cars left parked on snow emergency streets will be subject to tagging and towing if parked in violation after 5 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 26. Violating the alternate-side of the street parking rules also will result in fines. The fine for violating the snow emergency rules is $75; towing fees are extra.

A list of snow emergency streets can be found on the City’s website by following this link: www.bridgeportct.gov/pages/NewsDetails.aspx?itemid=144. (See attached list of snow emergency streets.)

Note from Department of Public Works: Regularly scheduled trash/recyclable pick up on Thursday will be delayed until Friday and Friday’s pick-up will now occur on Saturday.

Note from Greater Bridgeport Transit: Bus riders should check www.gogbt.com for latest service updates.

Shelter information: Anyone in need of shelter should call 2-1-1 for assistance.

Snow emergency reminders:

• During the snow emergency all city residents should heed alternate side of the street parking rules until the snow emergency has been lifted. For example, on odd-numbered days, (Jan. 27), residents should move their cars to the odd-numbered side (house numbers ending in 1,3,5,7 and 9) side of the street by 7 a.m. on Thursday morning.

• During the storm, residents with snow-plowing concerns should call 203.576.1311 or 203.579.3829.

• The Department of Public Works reminds all residents and business owners to shovel the sidewalk and walkways, including curb cuts, for pedestrian safety. If sidewalks are not cleared, the City may clean the sidewalk and charge the owner a fee for doing so, as well as impose a $100 per day fine for violating a City ordinance.

• Please do not shovel, or use a snow blower or plow to throw snow back into the street from your driveway or sidewalk. Anyone found throwing snow back into the street will be subject to a fine.

• Residents and business owners are also asked to clear fire hydrants, and the immediate area around it, of snow to improve neighborhood safety.

  1. I hear big Charlie is on vacation. He’ll call in from Florida tomorrow and say “Mr. Mayor, I did a fantastic job. All the streets are clean. I am patting myself on the back as we speak. I got it done again.” All the while the entire East Side, East End, Seaside Village and hollow are a mess. Dumb and dumber.

  2. Charlie is in Florida trying to pick up hints on how to organize snow removal from Miami Public works director. He has his Nextel radio and will pass his advice along to Tony D so he doesn’t knock down any more fences.

  3. *** Is it a sign of the times, of things to come, & is the darkness arriving more and more before the dawn? We are in the time of “KALI” with mother nature giving us more & more examples of things to come. Are we prepared? One never knows do one? *** HERE WE GO! ***

  4. If we could only program the new GPS system to plow then we may have a chance. Why is it the state road down the block is plowed to the pavement and my street is hit & miss, mostly miss?

    1. TC this is because the more experienced driver who did your section for years is on a main road truck now. Your street is being done by a rookie. The Dept. drops the ball when it come to training. Training takes time. They just care about productivity. The job gets done on paper but in reality it has much to be desired! Just ask any of the people who work in the Dept. The Dept. is filled with quality people. It is just mismanaged from the top down.

  5. Charlie’s hint from Miami was driving the truck but they missed the part about putting the plow down. They told him we don’t use the plow here so he figured it was the same for Bpt.
