City Hall is trying to put the genie back in the bottle–er–parking meter.
Installed downtown this winter, the new high-tech equipment replaced the aged, coins-only meters and can be fed through a credit card or–after a delay–the just-launched mobile phone application.
That convenience, however, also comes with a punitive function. The new meters employ cameras to issue $40 tickets. Some downtown merchants and visitors have complained such coldly-objective electronic enforcement is too aggressive for the still up-and-coming neighborhood, angering customers and scaring others away.
