Rockin’ time Thursday night at the Downtown Cabaret for the Rolling Stones tribute show. Nice to see a bunch of OIB friends including big Mojo Ralph Mojica, U.S. Senate candidate Sly Salcedo, OIB web designer Sue Katz and Anna looking out of control gyrating to Satisfaction. (Where’s yahooy when you need him?) Before the show we had dinner at Joe Tiago and Samantha Mauro’s hot new restaurant Bare Tapas & Vino on Fairfield Avenue. Check it out.
Can you believe it’s time for the annual Turkey of the Year nominations? Send us your recommendations. It’s been quite a year with Mayor Bill Finch winning reelection first in a court-delayed primary over Mary-Jane Foster then the general election over Republican Rick Torres and petitioning candidate Jeff Kohut.
Would you include these choices as Turkey Day stuffing? Chris Caruso, the Big Wave, supporter of Dan Malloy, opts out of the mayoral race and accepts a gubernatorial appointment earning him a new nickname, The Big Wage.
Former Mayor Joe Ganim preens like he wants his old job back, schmoozes politicians, plays Santa Claus with city nonprofits, but in the end bails on running. Maybe we should reserve for Joe capon of the year.
Then there’s former Mayor John Fabrizi who meowed for four years about being thrown under the bus by party politicians in 2007 in favor of Bill Finch and then out of nowhere steps up to to deliver a heart-pounding endorsement of the mayor in front of all those pols who dissed him. Gobble, gobble.
And how could we forget the queen of absentee ballots, City Councilwoman Lydia Martinez whose AB performance in the Democratic primary gives new meaning to Thanksgiving stuffing.
We’re wondering if Malloy deserves an honorary mention for spending more time on a mission to Kuwait and Afghanistan his first year as governor than in the state’s largest city. Ah, plenty of time to make amends. (We hope.)
Send us your nominations.
You had to spoil a great night by mentioning that turkey’s name?
Bite me!
Jason Bartlett. ‘Nuff said.
Bare Tapas is a very nice place, nice clientele. I think Caruso will take the award for Turkey of the year. I think Caruso would have a difficult time finding volunteers for any future endeavors. The word is people are disgusted with his sycophant behavior. His supporters in the last Mayoral election would not be there for him again. I wish him well with his new position as I think his political career is pretty much done. I think Caruso is a great advocate on many issues. I never believed he could or should be Mayor. His supporters who were with Mary-Jane Foster are disgusted with him. I do not think his coming out for Foster would have changed one vote. He has been invisible and for Caruso that is hard to do. He gets my vote.
I second the motion by Steve!!! Caruso would make a fine feast for Bridgeport’s Thanksgiving table!
The biggest Turkey this year in my opinion is School Superintendent John Ramos, whose job has been terminated as of Jan. 1 for the worst backroom moves on the BOE since Mario’s push for School Contractors. That’s my vote, or maybe the Giblet Award as a runner up?
Hey! What about Ned?
La Diabla Lydia Martinez.
My third place vote goes to City Council Pres. Tom McCarthy. The ball-less blunder does absolutely nothing as both Council Prez and City Employee. He is not an independent leader; he is not a facilitator; he merely takes his marching orders from whomever is mayor and does exactly what he is told to do. But what qualifies him as a turkey is he doesn’t even know it. Gobble, gobble …
My vote for second place goes to The Big Wage. Talk about a loser. One of the reasons I heard for him not supporting MJF was she did not support him four years ago. The real reason is he would not support Anybody But Caruso. ABC. But he gets my first place vote for the What’s In It For Me Award. That seems to be the number one question he asks when he has to make any decision.
But my number one vote for Turkey Of The Year must go to Jason Gobble Gobble Gobble Barrett.
How many candidates are there for BOE? What is the deadline for submitting names of workers to the Registrar? Deadline for submitting names of moderators and assistants?
He totally screwed up too many times not to be given this award.
Nice Guy; terrible campaign manager.
*** Turkey of year goes to the CT SEEC for their continued bark with no bite policies, no? ***
A turkey of the year nomination and award strikes me as a very serious matter.
Who has best exemplified Bridgeport’s reputation for bold political behavior beyond the expectations of normal decency and respect for common ethics?
Who indeed can rightly claim to seize the day and put beyond belief any concept of standard interpretation of rules in the electoral process?
It takes great courage to expose the fraud of the political pieties of the secretary of state and other anointed guardians of the democratic process.
Yes, the Bridgeport Democratic Party is indeed well-served in enhancing and adding to its historic traditions in city politics by the outstanding contributions in the past year to the participation of names in the election balloting process by Lydia Martinez.
Ladies and gentlemen, I humbly submit the decision should be unanimous: Give Lydia the bird.
… and the finger 😉
Hey Lennie, you never reported Fleeta Hudson was sentenced to serve some time. What did she do?
I understand the CT Post will have an article about this on Sunday, November 20, 2011. See the top of the CT Post page:
www .ctpost.com
Ray writes: She served a 40-year “sentence” in public service. You just love to ~/~, don’t you Joel? Here’s Keila’s article:
Very nice article on Fleeta Hudson. What a shame Mr. Gonzalez had to make a weak attempt to distort it.
Open, Accountable and Transparent …
Three words that should describe successful and productive institutions. I have found the City Clerk’s office provides a view of the City processes, inasmuch as minutes of meetings, notices of hearings, financial reports and other public records are stored there.
However, if one were to read the Bridgeport City Charter and ordinances and ask oneself, “What is supposed to be on file and is not there?” you would be surprised at the list you could develop. Who is responsible for seeing there would be nothing to put on such a list??? Perhaps the City Clerk office itself??? Receiving paperwork or initiating it are things the office handles competently I will guess. However, who in the City can call attention to reports or records that are not submitted, to information that is incomplete, or to windows of public information that have not been opened to the public for years?
If your answer is the City Clerk’s office, then you may just ask why are these things not done routinely? And from my perspective, it may be it is not well to serve the public primarily with 100% of your intelligence and energy, because there are political consequences. So living up to the Charter or looking at what or how something might be done better as ‘public service’ wins no rewards and potentially upsets the current people in power. ‘Don’t rock the boat’ becomes the mantra of the day. The next four years for the City may be most interesting and challenging for those currently in office. Time will tell.
Turkey of the year? That’s the guy who actually thinks he’s the Mayor just because he got 69% of the lowest vote count ever in the city of Bridgeport!!!
Turkey of the Year would be Finch, without a doubt.
