Tight Election For City Council President On Tap

The contest for City Council president Monday night is shaping up as a tight battle between incumbent Aidee Nieves who’s had the job for seven years and North End veteran Jeanette Herron.

The City Charter requires 11 votes for victory among the 20-member legislative body. This thing is so tight that one vote either way will swing victory. Who’ll break the logjam?

This will make for must-see You Tube TV on the city’s account portal.

The council has several new members that will cast a vote. So, numerous political machinations are underway. This thing is all about personalities and power, not about policy.

Two council members Alfredo Castillo and Maria Pereira are facing numerous felony charges for alleged election fraud. Castillo is supporting Herron. How will Pereira, no fan of Nieves or Herron, vote? If she does vote it won’t be for Nieves. But she could be pried loose if Herron offers chummy committee assignments where the rubber meets the road for council business.

Alfredo Castillo, right, joined forces with City Clerk Lydia Martinez and City Councilwoman Maria Pereira, standing, in a failed attempt to defeat Aidee Nieves at the polls.

Nieves has stripped Pereira from key committee slots for her inflammatory rhetoric and public actions.

Castillo, Pereira and City Clerk Lydia Martinez all worked against Nieves’ reelection which she won handily.

So, the next line of attack is trying to deny Nieves as leader for another two years.
